Scrimmages are starting. Who are the teams to beat in Howard, Baltimore, Carroll, Anne Arundel and Harford Counties? Marriotts Ridge should be strong in HoCo but who else? Hereford and Towson the top teams in Baltimore Co.? Westminster is always good in Carroll. Severna Park strong again this year? Fallston in Harford?

Howard: Glenelg and Marriotts Ridge are the two favorites to win the county. They both return a lot with Glenelg keeping all but 1 starter on the best offense in the county and losing every starter on defense while MR returns pretty much everybody on defense and adding another D1 pole while losing all but 1 starter on offense. Whoever wins that game in the playoffs, just like last year, will probably win the 2A title. Centennial returns a lot from the team last year that won the 3A east but has a few key losses on both sides of the ball. Not sure who Centennial will have at goalie this year but that could be the main thing that would trip them up. Howard loses a lot pretty much everywhere but it's Howard and they're usually always competitive. I would rank the teams in tiers because I feel there's a big difference between the top tier and the next tier: Tier 1- Glenelg and MR, Tier 2-Centennial and Howard, Tier 3- River Hill and Hebron, Tier 4-Everybody Else

Baltimore: Two team county really, It's gonna be either Towson or Hereford with Hereford probably being the favorite.

Anne Arundel: SP is obviously the favorite even though they lose that ridiculous mid line that included 3 UMD signees. They have a kid committed to UVA who'll probably do it all for them this year on O. They also return a D1 goalie and most of their defense from last year. Broadneck could challenge them but SP is just a bit more talented it looks like.

Carroll: Westminster is the favorite like always. Not much needs to be said about it. Defending 3A champs that return a lot everywhere.

Harford: Have no clue really but I'd go eiter CMW, Bel Air, or Fallston

Frederick: 1.Linganore 2.Oakdale 3.Urbana

Montgomery: Churchill. I assume their still the class of the county but I know they lose their best attackmen who really carried that offense last year.

Saw that Urbana beat Marriotts Ridge (8-6) and Northern (16-2) in their scrimmage on Saturday. It's a scrimmage so not much stock can be put in it but it's very interesting that Urbana beat Ridge even if it only is March 9th

Like you said, I wouldn't read too much into scrimmage scores. However, Urbana did get a couple kids back from the MIAA who were on the Under Armour Underclass team as rising sophomores.

The twins are legit and young. FredCo's top 3 teams all look like they can get to states in their respective classes. Linganore scrimmages Glenelg on Thursday so that should be an interesting one.

Westminster looked like the strongest team at Severna Park. SP went up early, but then I lost track of how many in a row Westminster rattled off. Heard they played well versus Northern and Towson as well.

9. Westminster
Coach: Steve DeFeo

Last season: 18-1, No. 8

Postseason: Class 3A state champion

Outlook: A quick scroll down the Owls roster spells bad news for Carroll County and the entire Class 3A field. The defending state champions have game-changing talent all over the field led by midfielder Christian Etchison, last year’s Carroll County Times Player of the Year, and high-scoring attackman Bubba Love. Chase Buckwalter, Conner Covey and Evan Park also return to give the Owls dominant play at midfield, and goalie Logan Covey teams with defensemen Noah Baugher and Andrew Burns to hold down opponents. The Owls are well-positioned to win the program’s third state crown.

10. Severna Park
Coach: Dave Earl

Last season: 17-2, No. 7

Postseason: Class 4A champion

Outlook: The three-time defending state champions enter this season with more questions than at anytime in their recent run, needing to replace a good chunk of last year’s powerful offense. Attackman Michael Harmeyer, who scored the overtime game-winner in the title game, returns and will play a vital role while a largely new cast — mostly in the midfield — gets settled. The Falcons’ entire defense returns with goalie Shane Carr providing confidence and big-game experience. They also will lean on the team’s winning culture to help maintain their lofty standard and remain the team to beat in Anne Arundel and 4A.

12. Glenelg
Coach: Josh Hatmaker

Last season: 15-2, No. 13

Postseason: Class 2A South Section I finalist

Outlook: After winning the Howard County crown, Glenelg ended last season on a sour note after falling to eventual state champion Marriotts Ridge by a goal in the region playoffs. In addition to having returning talent all over the field, the Gladiators have added urgency for a season full of promise. Attackman Michael Doughty is the offensive catalyst and leader, Tyler Reiff and Ryan Hopkins anchor a deep and athletic midfield that can get the ball up in a hurry, and Drew Sotka will be a key on defense. Skilled, athletic, experienced and motivated, the Gladiators are primed to defend their county crown and challenge for a state title.

13. Marriotts Ridge
Coach: Tony Incontrera

Last season: 17-2, No. 9

Postseason: Class 2A champion

Outlook: Fresh off the program’s first state crown, great comfort lies in back with standout goalie Colin Kelley returning for his fourth season as a starter. Defensemen Ricky Fedorchak and Andrew Page further bolster the defense, which will be leaned on heavily with the Mustangs losing six of their top seven scorers from last season. With faceoff specialist Andrew Luciano returning, the Mustangs offense should have the ball plenty to jell. If they can find consistent scoring, the Mustangs will be a strong contender in Howard and make another formidable playoff run.

14. Hereford
Coach: Sal Picataggi

Last season: 16-3, No. 12

Postseason: Class 2A finalist

Outlook: Led by a tight senior class, the Bulls seemed poised to add to their record nine state titles last year, but fell short with a loss to Marriotts Ridge in the championship. The missed opportunity is providing motivation for the returning players and they have some quality starting points to make another push. Attackman Jake Furman provides instant offense, and a deep and athletic midfield — led by Grafton Griffey and faceoff specialist Connor Dunay — is the team’s strength. Look for Towson and Dulaney to present a formidable challenge for the defending Baltimore County champions in league play to help the Bulls prime for the playoffs.

15. Broadneck
Coach: Clay White

Last season: 12-6, not ranked

Postseason: Class 4A East finalist

Outlook: White enters his 33rd and final season at Broadneck and the Bruins are equipped to make it a special one with a talented group determined to see him go out on a high note. Senior midfielder Vinny Facciponti wins faceoffs, scores goals and consistently influences games to lead a deep midfield. Attackman Keegan Houser is a steady scorer and the defense is experienced with goalie Ben McGrady the anchor. The Bruins can have their season go from good to great if they can get past Anne Arundel and state champion Severna Park.

Others considered: Centennial (12-6, not ranked), C. Milton Wright (10-10, not ranked); Gerstell (11-8, not ranked), Mount Saint Joseph (6-11, not ranked), Patterson Mill (14-6, No. 15), Towson (14-5, not ranked)

Heard Towson was up 5-2 on Westminster at the half and played backups throughout the 2nd half. Towson apparently also led Severna park at halftime and dominated Northern. From a parent so take it with a grain of salt.

Severna Park will struggle this year. Most of the top talent in the area has gone to private.
