Going to be tough for them to get past TB, a team that just happens to be a bad matchup for them. Still should be a good one!

Agreed. Plus it’s a rematch from last year’s semifinals that went six. Teams with more talent start to rise to the top this time of year over the less talented but hard working teams.

(Just as long as Montreal doesn’t win it 😉 )

Rangers’ Adam Fox wins Norris Trophy as NHL’s top defenseman

Adam Fox Named Hockey’s Top Defenseman, First Jewish Player to Win a Major NHL Award

https://thejewishnews.com/2021/07/01/ad ... nhl-award/

It’s been seven decades since the New York Rangers had a Jewish defenseman, when Hy Buller was a standout.

(JTA) — It’s been seven decades since the New York Rangers had a star Jewish defenseman. This season they had the best defenseman in the National Hockey League, Jewish or otherwise.

Adam Fox, a native of New York’s suburban Long Island and a longtime Rangers fan, was named the winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy on Tuesday signifying the top defenseman.

The 23-year-old, a former star at Harvard, joins Hall of Famer Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins to win the award in their second seasons.

“It’s special,” said Fox, whose father is a longtime season ticket holder for the Rangers, according to the New York Post. “I’ve been throwing that word around a lot the last few weeks and it’s now accurate for how I feel. You hear your name with [Orr and Leetch], it’s always going to be a special, special thing.”

He was referencing Brian Leetch, a former Rangers defenseman and also a Norris Trophy winner.

Along with stopping opposing scorers, Fox led NHL defensemen with 42 assists while finishing second in points with 47. He also was recognized as first team all-league.

Asked by the New York Post about being one of the NHL’s few Jewish athletes, he said in a 2019 interview, “It’s definitely nice to represent a community, for sure.”

Fox follows in the footsteps of one Hy Buller, who played three seasons for the Rangers in the early 1950s. He was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1951-52, according to the iconic hockey writer Stan Fischler, also Jewish.

Fox, like Buller, is 5-foot-11 and weighs 181 pounds, compensating for a lack of size with speed. And he’s a fan favorite, also like Buller.

“Buller’s connection to the large Jewish population in New York was used by Rangers management to attract a new audience to the home games,” Fischler recalls one remembrance. “Banners emblazoned with the Star of David hung from The Garden and his faith was frequently reinforced by sports writers.”

The Rangers also featured Alex Levinsky, a Jewish defenseman in the 1930s.

In 2019, the New Jersey Devils drafted Jack Hughes — the first Jewish player to be picked No. 1.

Stanley Cup: Tampa Bay rolls to 6-3 win in Montreal for commanding 3-0 series lead
The Lightning have a chance to capture their second straight championship on Monday night after winning the first Stanley Cup final game in Montreal since 1993.

https://www.pressherald.com/2021/07/02/ ... ries-lead/

Tyler Johnson and the quick-strike Tampa Bay Lightning moved a victory away from successfully defending their title, beating the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 on Friday night in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The Lightning caught the Canadiens flat-footed by scoring twice in the opening minutes of each of the first two periods to take a 3-0 series lead. Game 4 is Monday night in Montreal.

Tampa Bay is now in position to join Pittsburgh (2016 and ’17) in becoming just the second team to win consecutive titles since 1999. The Lightning also have an opportunity to complete the first sweep in the final since Detroit beat Washington in 1998.

Johnson scored twice and Nikita Kurcherov and Victor Hedman each had a goal and assist. Jan Rutta and Blake Coleman, with an empty-netter, also scored for the Lightning, who also won the Cup in 2004. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 31 shots

Vasilevskiy inexplicably whiffed in allowing Nick Suzuki’s shot from the right circle beat him through the legs to cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 4-2 with 1:56 left in the second period. The goalie responded by stopping the first eight shots he faced in the third period, including Joel Armia from in close, before Johnson scored his second goal to put the Lightning up 5-2 with 4:41 left.

The game was the NHL’s first played in the month of July, a year after playing its first games in August.

Playing the first Stanley Cup final since their championship-winning 4-1 victory over the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 at the Montreal Forum on June 9, 1993, did little to spark the Canadiens. Neither did the return of interim coach Dominique Ducharme for the Canadiens, who were outscored 8-2 in two games at Tampa Bay.

One of Ducharme’s first moves was to spend Montreal’s only timeout after the Lightning scored 1:35 apart to build a 2-0 lead 3:27 in. Ducharme spent the past two weeks in mandatory self-quarantine in Montreal after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Canadiens’ respected defense and Carey Price’s stellar goaltending that carried them to their surprising playoff run have proven no match for the Lightning.

Down 2-1 after one period, Montreal unraveled to open the second period.

Defenseman Erik Cernak caught the Canadiens sleeping on a line change to set up Kucherov scoring on a 2-on-0 break 1:40 into the period. From deep in his own zone, Cernak sent a pass intended for Ondrej Palat at Montreal’s blue line. Palat chased down the puck at the left circle and fed Kucherov, who flipped it in the open right side.

Johnson scored 1:53 later on a 2-on-1 break and after Montreal goalie Carey Price got his blocker up to stop Mathieu Joseph’s shot from the left circle. The rebound caromed off Joseph’s skate and directly to Johnson who backhanded it into the open right side.

The Lightning have scored the opening goal in all three games and have yet to trail in the series.

Price finished with 24 saves.

Phillip Danault and Corey Perry also scored for a Montreal team that felt disrespected in making its deepest playoff run since winning its 24th Cup. The Canadiens entered the postseason with the worst record of the NHL’s 16 qualifiers before rallying from a 3-1 first-round series deficit against Toronto, sweeping Winnipeg in the second round and then eliminating Vegas in a six-game semifinals series.

In NHL playoff history, only four teams have rallied to win a series after losing the the first three games, with Toronto the only one to do so in the final in beating Detroit to win the Cup in 1942. The Los Angeles Kings were the last team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit by beating San Jose in a 2014 first-round series.

Tampa Bay has been totally dominant. Montreal will need a miracle if they want to survive the series & win the Cup.

Documentary - 1994 New York Rangers

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

This is an outstanding sports documentary, let alone hockey or NY Rangers documentary. Really well done. Intriguing, exciting and humorous all the way through the one hour and forty minutes. The interviews and anecdotes from some of the longtime, longsuffering Rangers fans throughout is a special touch.

Happens all the time here in Lake Wobegone during their charity events. About 30 years ago it got so bad at one of those games with the fights breaking out in the parking lot that the local sheriff intervened and busted each and every one of them. So funny!

Minnesota Gophers defeat St Cloud State on a late non-call by refs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8lts6yqPyI

https://www.twincities.com/2021/10/16/m ... es-fuming/

This is not the first time things have gotten crazy during homecoming at St. Cloud State.

The place that gave us riots on a Saturday night in October more than 30 years ago was this time home to a wild and wacky hockey game that ended with the Gophers winning 4-3 in overtime, and St. Cloud State crying foul over the game-winning play.

Officially, Sammy Walker’s second goal of the game ended things just 36 seconds into a 3-on-3 extra session. The goal came after Walker’s linemate Blake McLaughlin appeared to pull down Huskies defenseman Nick Perbix from behind; no call was made, and the Gophers scored to end it. As boos and debris rained down on the rink and Huskies coach Brett Larson walked across the ice to yell at the officials, the Gophers skated off with their third win of the season.

Bryce Brodzinski and Aaron Huglen scored second-period goals for the Gophers (3-1-0) after they fell behind 1-0, and Walker scored early in the third period before the Huskies rallied to force overtime.

Gophers coach Bob Motzko, on the visitors bench for the first time after being the Huskies head coach for 13 seasons, felt a no-call on the winning play was correct.

“It was a dive at the end. The kid, he knows he dove,” Motzko said, offering the idea that a hooking call on McLaughlin and an embellishment call on Perbix would have been the only appropriate whistle. “But if you’re going to call it he should’ve called two and two. I felt we deserved to win that game. I know it’s going to be controversial how it played down, but it played the way it was supposed to tonight.”

Not surprisingly on a night filled with emotion, Larson had a different view.

“I’m embarrassed that that happened and that non-call really ruined a great hockey game,” Larson said. “There were two teams that, I thought, played great tonight and just gave our fans a treat — a back-and-forth game between great hockey teams. Unfortunately, that situation really left a tough taste in your mouth.”

The Huskies got goals from Sam Hentges, Jack Peart and Nolan Walker but fell to 4-2-0 overall. They got stellar goaltending from David Hrenak, who had 29 saves.

Hentges, a Minnesota Wild draft pick, made the first mark on the scoreboard during a classic scramble in front of the Gophers’ Jack LaFontaine, in which the goalie made the first save but lost sight of the puck with traffic around the crease. The play was reviewed, and the goal counted.

Early in the second period the Gophers drew even on Huglen’s first collegiate goal. Hrenak made a highlight-reel save on a shot by Huglen, a freshman from Roseau, Minn., but later on the same shift the rookie slipped a rising shot under the goalie’s armpit to forge a 1-1 tie.

“Opportunity came and I was glad I got to capitalize on it,” said Huglen. “St. Cloud State’s got really good structure and obviously is a really good team, really well-coached. It was bound to be a good game, I’m just glad we came out on top.”

Brodzinski gave the Gophers their first lead of the weekend later in the second, stealing the puck from Perbix behind the Huskies net, then curling to the top of the crease and beating Hrenak with a wrist shot.

The Huskies and Gophers traded goals in the opening 73 seconds of the third, with Peart’s first collegiate goal producing a 2-2 tie, and Walker taking the lead back on the next shift. With Ben Meyers in the penalty box on a cross-checking call that was reviewed for a possible major penalty, the Huskies’ Walker redirected a puck past LaFontaine to produce overtime.

Motzko received a mostly warm reception from the Huskies fans before the game and admitted it was a homecoming for him as well.

“It’s different. I have great memories here, and then to see a crowd like this and the intensity, I’ve lived through this,” Motzko said. “This is a special place, and it was special tonight, too.”

LaFontaine finished with 29 saves. Motzko praised his goalie’s game, especially in the first period when the raucous crowd made the atmosphere unfriendly at best.

I watched it live on TV and caught radio commentary afterwards. Both sets of announcers for the Gophers said it was a terrible call. Well, that is true by today's standards. But in the old days the unwritten rule was let the players decide the outcome and don't make any such calls. I well remember when Tiger Williams got called for a penalty in an overtime playoff game and he went after the ref for violating that "rule". Only the quick thinking by Montreal defenseman Larry Robinson saved him from a perma ban.

Sad that this game ended that way but it was a good game.

Here's a better view of the play. Clearly a free hand grab of the jersey (1:29 mark). The immediate guilty reaction of the Gopher offender tells it all - he knew he was deserving of a penalty. Only after 1-2 seconds does he pick up his effort on the continuation. This ref should be sent back down to cross-ice mites.

I've been a hockey fan for over 60 years and have watched many amateurs games here in Lake Wobegone. I can honestly tell you that the officiating here is the absolute worst in the game. It is so atrocious as to be an embarrassment beyond all manner of redemption. Sad to say that many a good game was spoiled by the pitiful officiating.

Attended my first youth hockey game (bantams) in an awfully long time. So great to sit by the ice and see all that intense action. Strangely, masks were not required inside of the arena in West St Paul (Dakota County). Few people wore one even though county rules require it. As for me, wasn't taking any chances and kept mine on at all times.

Great game tonight but there was a major problem in that Rangers allowed Panthers to bump goalie Igor Shesterkin far too often tonight - in the old days you bump the goalie and they jump you with knuckle sandwiches. Rangers lost a goal for supposedly bumping the goalie but the refs failed to do the same on a call for them.

30-year-old Kreider tied Dean Prentice for 14th place in franchise history with 186 career goals for the Rangers, one behind Bryan Hextall Sr

With Video Review you see more and more stuff let go on the ice, especially around the crease. Toronto will make the call.

Every once in a while I miss the good old days where, if you bump the goalie, you're cooked. How I wish Billy Smith could have been reincarnated for the game so that he could hack the SOB's who bumped Igor.
