During this pandemic, I thought it would be a good time to start an updated thread on New York State Section I Lacrosse. Here is a great article that appeared in the New York Times back in 1981 that I hope you enjoy:

The following is a list of the new class alignments and leagues for each class that were proposed for the 2020 spring season. It is notable that John Jay (Katonah/Cross River) moved down to Class C, Lakeland/Panas moved down to Class B and Rye moved up to Class B. Further, Peekskill, which had a team for many years, cancelled its program before the pandemic.

I added the towns that serve the regional high schools in parenthesis. Note that for reasons unknown, the Section I administrators do not use the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) terms for Class and League, choosing instead to use the terms Conference and Class. The NYSPHSAA uses four class alignments based on school enrollment: Classes A, B, C & D. I edited the titles for consistency with the other sections in New York State.

Note also that there are in inordinate number of small schools in southern Westchester County. Accordingly, Section I has a lot class D schools. That happens to be the league with arguably the highest number of competitive teams.

CLASS A
League 1:
Carmel
Mahopac
Mamaroneck
North Rockland
Suffern
White Plains

League 2:
Arlington
New Rochelle
Ossining
Scarsdale
Wappingers

CLASS B
League1:
Fox Lane (Bedford/Mt. Kisco)
Horace Greeley (Chappaqua)
Lakeland/Panas (Yorktown/Shrub Oak)
Rye
Somers
Yorktown

League 2:
Brewster
Clarkstown North (New City)
Clarkstown South (West Nyack)
Harrison
Tappan Zee

CLASS C
League 1:
Nanuet
Nyack
Pearl River
Sleepy Hollow (Tarrytown)

League 2:
Byram Hills (Armonk)
Eastchester
Henry Hudson (Montrose/Croton/Peekskill)
John Jay (Katonah/Cross River)
Our Lady of Lourdes (Poughkeepsie)
Pelham

CLASS D
League 1:
Briarcliff
Bronxville
Dobbs Ferry
Haldane
Putnam Valley

League 2:
Albertus Magnus
Croton-Harmon
Irvington
Keio Academy (Harrison)
North Salem

League 3:

League 4:

Apparently US Lacrosse is attempting to get some traction toward having NY state reclassify the COVID risk level given to Boy’s Lacrosse in NY.

Here is an excerpt from an email I received from a local league.

“...You can help with this effort by reaching out to https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/gov ... ntact-form to share with the Governor how you feel about the guidance, request the modification to change their risk classification for lacrosse to "moderate risk" and share how important lacrosse is to you and your athletes.

Please feel free to use the information in this outreach as you personalize your communication to the Governor, as you are coaches, parents and educators within the state of NY and the Governor and his staff would appreciate knowing that bringing lacrosse back to safely in New York is important to you.

Thank you so much for your willingness to assist with this important effort and share this request with others in the New York lacrosse community who want to have their voices heard. Please feel free to copy us on or share your individual letters with us so we can recognize your efforts! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Return to Play staff lead, VP of Lacrosse Operations, Ann Kitt Carpenetti at [email protected]

Best,
Ann

You're welcome.

No lacrosse until April of 2021. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association suspended all non-season practice/training for all "high risk sports," which includes football, basketball, ice hockey, wrestling and lacrosse.

The NYSPHSAA moved football and volleyball to the spring, with the season starting on March 1, 2021.

The Association moved the start date of all spring sports to April 19th.

The Governor of NY previously approved cross country, field hockey, girls swimming, girls tennis, soccer (boys and girls) to start on Sept. 21, 2020.

Section I lacrosse is well underway. It looks like the leagues were shuffled a bit since an earlier post:

Rye did move up from C to B (and beat Yorktown in OT).

Yorktown neighbors, (the two-school merger program), Lakeland/Panas moved down from Class A to Class B.

(Edit:) Mahopac, 1996 NYS Class A champions also moved down from Class A to Class B.

Defending Class D champion Briarcliff moved up from Class D to Class C.

John Jay did not move to Class C as was earlier reported.

Below is the class rankings for May 23rd according to Mike Dougherty of The Journal News (lohud.com)

Section 1 class rankings

Class A: 1. Mamaroneck; 2. North Rockland; 3. Scarsdale; 4. Suffern; 5. White Plains; 6. Arlington.

Class B: 1. Rye; 2. Yorktown; 3. Lakeland/Panas; 4. Somers; 5. John Jay-CR; 6. Mahopac.

Class C:
1. Briarcliff; 2. Pelham; 3. Tappan Zee; 4. Byram Hills.

Class D: 1. Bronxville; 2. Pleasantville; 3. Irvington; 4. Dobbs Ferry.

Got to see Tappan Zee defeat previously undefeated North Rockland this afternoon 7-4. Was a nice close game for the better part. Good performance by the Tappan Zee faceoff man.

Section 1 End of Regular Section Top 10 by Mike Dougherty, Journal News

All records entering June 1

1. Mamaroneck (12-1) — The Tigers play better on edge, so finding the right mindset heading into the playoffs is the first priority this week. Last week: 1
2. Iona Prep (12-4) — With playmakers like John Mitchell and K.J. Delane and Mikey Rooney and Zach Perlett the Gaels are prolific. Last week: 2
3. Briarcliff (11-1) — Is there a group playing with more confidence or having more fun anywhere in Section 1? Last week: 3
4. Rye (7-2) — A win over Scarsdale to close out the regular season gives the Garnets home field in the upcoming Class B playoffs. Last week: 4
5. Yorktown (9-3) — Dylan Beck and Harry Griff look more comfortable in leading roles and the defense is making strides. Last week: 5
6. Lakeland/Panas (8-3) — The Rebels were regaining momentum last week before they were forced to pause. Last week: 6
7. Bronxville (8-4) — A win over Yorktown in the regular-season finale would send the Broncos into the postseason with a jolt of adrenaline. Last week: 7
8. Stepinac (10-4) — C.J. Sanchez has been exactly what a roster stocked with talented underclassmen needed. Last week: 8
9. Scarsdale (10-2) — Finishing up against ranked competitors is going to help the Raiders get up to speed for next week. Last week: 10
10. Byram Hills (9-3) — This entire roster is under the radar, but the only losses came against Mamaroneck, Scarsdale and Briarcliff. Last week: 10

On the bubble: Fox Lane (9-3); North Rockland (13-1); Pelham (7-5), Tappan Zee (9-5).

Section 1 Championships

The Section 1 finals worked out as expected. This is a rebuilding year for Class B John Jay, who played numerous freshmen and Class D Pleasantville who graduated several star players. It is great to see that Rye handled the move up from Class C to Class B by making it to the finals versus Yorktown.

Byram Hills (Armonk), a team that lost in the Class C championship in 2019 to Rye returns to the final, this time facing Briarcliff, a team that also handled the move (from Class D to Class C) without missing a blink.

My Picks:
Mamaroneck over Scarsdale. The Tigers played well in the states in 2019 and have established themselves as the premier Class A program in Section 1.
Upset: Rye over Yorktown. Yes, the Garnets are seeded higher, but this is Yorktown. They are always team to beat in Section 1. Tradition.
Briarcliff over Byram Hills. The Bobcats are returning to their past excellence, but Briarcliff is a notch above.
Bronxville over Irvington. It has been a great season for Irvington, a relatively new program, but Bronxville is powerful.

Class A
No. 3 Scarsdale Raiders (13-3) at No. 1 Mamaroneck Tigers (16-1)
Game time: 7 p.m.

Class B
No. 2 Yorktown (13-3) at No. 1 Rye (13-2)
Game time: 4:30 p.m.

Class C
No. 5 Byram Hills (12-4) at No. 2 Briarcliff (13-1)
Game time: 1 p.m.

Class D
No. 2 Bronxville (10-5) at No. 1 Irvington (14-3)
Game time: 4:30 p.m.

The NY State high school lacrosse community made the most of a difficult situation in 2021. Since there were no state playoffs this year, the results of the 2019 semifinals between Hudson Valley and Long Island remain a collective draw: Two wins for Section 1 and two wins for Long Island

2019 NYSPHSAA Boys Lacrosse Semi-Finals, Hudson Valley/Section I vs. Long Island/Sections 8, 11
Class A: Massapequa 14, Mamaroneck 8
Class B: John Jay 11, Manhasset 10
Class C: Shoreham-Wading River 13, Rye 6
Class D: Briarcliff 10, Mattituck 3

It will be interesting to see if the 50/50 split from 2019 will remain or change in 2022.
