WCLA 2019 Season

Post by hurstlax 39 »

Hope that everybody from the LP message boards migrates over here and we can maintain a place to talk about and hear scores and updates from across the country and the WCLA!!

I know that it is tough to keep tabs on what is going on around the league without these message boards ... so be active and let the discussions begin

Nationals are in Virginia Beach, VA again this year after being away fro a few years. I've heard that they replaced all of the grass fields with turf which should be nice and that venue was great for parking and proximity to the beach and boardwalk.

Hurst, question. Is this the main/only resource for the WCLA? Just seems odd to have so many teams and such a weak website and... No other websites.

Hey Admin,

The wcla.us site is pretty much the main site. Some of the conferences also have their own website like WCLL here (https://www.womenscollegiatelacrosse.com/)

But its pretty minimal. The WCLA is definitely a HUGE undertaking and a giant labor of love. I'd say that most teams are self-coached and they do a ton of fundraising just to make it to tournaments and pay for everything.

I don't know much about the central administration stuff and who manages the website but I know that the overall coordination between leagues is minimal because it is mostly volunteer with some support from US Lacrosse as part of the team dues go to pay for some support and in planning the National tournament.

What big weekend and invitational tournaments are going on this season?

I know that the Golden State Invitational is happening at UCLA the weekend of Feb 15-17
Santa Barbara Shootout is that same weekend Feb 15-17
Georgia is having some teams weekend of March 22-24
Pitt is having their invitational the weekend of March 22-24

Is the Colorado weekend, usually early April, happening again this year?
Fall Ball just ended but I am already itching for the season to start!!!

Just found this today and came here to share it with you. :) You beat me to it.

I need to look at the schedules more closely but... I think they look pretty solid. But, again, I need to look more closely.

You should be able to get the historic rankings for top 20 but outside of that I doubt you will find much good data besides what you already have.

The D1 rankings committee chair is John Pellino (coach of Army Womens Club team) and the D2 rankings committee chair is Mindy Stone (coach of the Denver Womens Club team) I can probably find their contact info and PM it to you if you want but they should have all of the historic rankings data.

I thought I had a spreadsheet with weekly rankings changes from the last few seasons but I think I deleted it when I got a new computer :?

Does anyone know if Lacrosse Magazine is planning on doing a pre-season article/poll for the WCLA? They have always done one in the past but it would normally be out by now?

I mean games started already but there hasn't really been any word from anyone about how the new rankings will get released and disseminated ... what is going on?!??!

UCLA and Georgia have already opened their seasons
Pitt has had two scrimmages and another weekend of scrimmages coming up before heading out to UCLA for the start of their season
Michigan's first game will be Friday
Santa Clara notched a close win over Cal Poly (6-4)
Delaware doesn't start up until Feb 23

27 games scheduled for this Saturday the 9th!
Santa Clara vs UCLA should be a good one

I think its an interesting ranking system!! Definitely excited to see how it plays out over the season with something like the WCLA where not all teams play each other and there is a wide variety of schedules (ie some teams play a LOT of games, some teams play few, some play only in their conference, some play across the country)

It will be very interesting to see what the correlation is to the FanLax ranking system and the human ranking done by the committee

Loving the site and all of the new features and everything that has been put in!!! Keep up the good work :D

first, thank you. Second, you're spot on. When each team plays all the same times the same number of times, this system is perfect. e.g. If we track only in-conference games, we're spot on. but when 2 teams play different opponents and a different number of games, them we need to plug in mitigators. At a point in the season when some teams have played 4 games and others have played 0, the rankings are about as accurate as a preseason poll. i.e. It's not very accurate. but once the teams start hitting their stride, we'll plug in the plug-ins. e.g. We normalize the number of games, we factor in Strength of Schedule, etc. Anyway, soon. And, at least for now and also later, I like the numbers to show significance of Ws, Ls, how "big" a game is, etc. To comb through all the games to see what is the next big game is annoying. Especially when there are a lot of teams and/or you're prejudiced in what's considered a big game. With this, it does it for us, tells us how big, when the game is, etc. I like that.

Michigan vs. Michigan St. tomorrow. That's pretty good. :)
