2009 Draft
New postby Matnum PI on Thu Jan 29, 2009 2:05 pm

2009 Draft

The first pick on Sunday, February 8th, will start at 8:00 EST (sharp). There are 2 minutes per pick. If after 2 minutes you haven't picked a player, the next coach can pick. The former coach can still pick but the latter coach can "steal" the player he's about to pick.

The Draft Order and More is "Coming Soon".

Also, you may want to look at the 2008 Leading Scorers. The players with asterisks were undrafted.

2009 Draft Order
New postby Matnum PI on Thu Jan 29, 2009 2:25 pm

The Draft Order is determined by a combination of each fantasy team's/school's Lax Rank, Education Rank, and Social Rank.* The 2008 Draft Order, as determined by these relevant rankings, are:

2009 Draft Order:
1- BruterLax
2- Johnny Reb
3- AllSports
4- Spenny
5- MikeLaw84
6- LaxSoup
7- Maddog
8- PA Talk
9- Wholly Metro
10- Genghiskhanbluejay
11- GCLax
12- UberHop
13- Woodnstix
14- Stegmakk
15- Hoosierlaxer
16- Matnum
17- Attack Dog
18- NC Lax

The Education Rank (picked randomly) is:
1- AllSports
2- Maddog Istonedu321
3- Spenny
4- Johnny Reb
5- BruterLax
6- Genghiskhanbluejay
7- MikeLaw84
8- LaxSoup
9- Attack Dog
10- Woodnstix
11- Stegmakk
12- Wholly Metro
13- Uber Jackson
14- PA Talk
15- Hoosierlaxer
16- Matnum
17- GCLax
18- NC Lax

2- BruterLax
3- LaxSoup
4- Wholly Metro
5- PA Talk
6- Spenny
7- MikeLaw84
8- GCLax
9- AllSports
10- Maddog Istonedu321
11- Genghiskhanbluejay
12- Hoosierlaxer
13- Uber Jackson
14- NC Lax
15- Matnum
16- Stegmakk
17- Attack Dog
18- Woodnstix

The Lax Rank is:
1- GCLax
2- BruterLax
3- PA Talk
4- Matnum
5- Biffman
6- MikeLaw84
7- AllSports
8- UberHop
9- NC Lax
10- Stegmakk
11- Johnny Reb
12- Wholly Metro
13- Hoosierlaxer
14- Spenny
15- Maddog
16- Genghiskhanbluejay
17- LaxSoup
18- Attack Dog

So you know how we determine the Lax Rank, the Lax Rank has two components: Past Lax Rank (Team's Past Success based on rankings at the end of previous seasons) and Future Lax Rank (Team's Future Success based on total points in the previous season by returning players).

The Past Lax Rank is:
1- MikeLaw84
2- GCLax
3- Biffman
4- Stegmakk
5- Matnum
6- BruterLax
7- UberHop
8- AllSports

12- Wholly Metro
13- Genghiskhanbluejay
14- Hoosierlaxer
15- NC Lax
16- Johnny Reb
17- Attack Dog
18- LaxSoup

The Future Lax Rank is:
1- NC Lax
2- PA Talk
2- Johnny Reb
4- GCLax
4- BruterLax
6- AllSports
7- Matnum
8- UberHop
9- Biffman
10- Wholly Metro
10- Hoosierlaxer
12- MikeLaw84
13- Stegmakk
13- LaxSoup
15- Attack Dog
16- Maddog Istonedu321
17- Spenny
17- Genghiskhanbluejay

* - In 2009, the Lax Rank counts .16 while the Education and Social Ranks will count .42 each. In 2010 and from every year their after, the Lax, Education, and Social Rank will all count evenly: 33.33%.

Good lord coming in 3rd last year got me nothing....At least I get 2 picks in a row. I believe I have now picked last 2 or 3 times in the last 4 years...

I refuse to believe that a North Carolina school has such a low social rank... :)

I thought a one day wait on the "rolling start" draft was tradition with Allsports but two days - more!?

Last year we were a round ahead of this by this point in the week.

With blue chip recruits to mull over, maybe Allsports would like to see this weekends scrimmage results before deciding his first pick. After all, there's no penalty for not making a pick until the official start of the draft.

Who knows how crazy it might be on Sunday night, it wouldn't surprise if some don't show up at all for the draft, let alone come prepared.

Sorry guys I was on vacation in Dominican Republic haven't seen a newspaper or computer in over a week and was not able to prepare for draft. I will try today if there is an obvious attack man someone wants to email me for the sake of the draft maybe I will select him so it will move on. Matt I trust you.

I cannot fault Allsports either. Some of the best and most athletic baseball players come from the DR. As a sign of progression of the sport these athletes giving up their bats for lacrosse sticks. That's what happened on long island 30 years ago - true story.

I don't remember us having any, let alone so many, dropped players picked up so early.

Agree - If I'd of drafted a freshman, at Pick #8 it would have been Rob Grimm, he's also listed as A/M which helps.

Stegs picks and then HoosierLaxer is up. I'm going off radar until Saturday night. I gave Spenny my pick. If someone grabs him, I'll make another pick on Saturday night. So, Stegs and Hoosier, in the name of what's best for the whole league, don't take my pick. :)

17th pick
New postby attack dog on Fri Feb 06, 2009 5:32 pm

Rob Pannell Cornell Fr. attack
I got an email from Matt that I was up, but it looks like there are some picks besides mine that have yet to be made, he'll clear it up when he gets back.

The draft is completed. With this said, it looks like some squads are short a player and… Some squads may have some “buyers remorse”. Thus…

1. Every team has, so to speak, 24 hours to finalize their teams. All adds and drops are first-come-first-served. Please post your add-drops within the “2009 Draft” thread. You can see the pre-draft team rosters as well as who has been drafted on the LaxPower site in order to know if the player you want is available.
2. Add-drops are closed after 8 PM on Monday, February 9th.
3. Please e-mail me or post your final 2009 Team Roster by 10 PM on Monday, February 9th. Please make sure all player names are spelled correctly as well as player positions and class years are correct.

Granted, I had the #16 pick but, even so, I really didn't like this year's draft choices. Like every year, the first ten or so picks are very good. there are always a handful of diamonds. But, I'm skeptical about the remaining "diamonds in the rough". Only time will tell. But, something seemed off about this year's class. Maybe it's just me...

Ok - Now two teams have requested DROP/ADDS where the added player is listed as a Defenseman on the teams official web site. I don't think the league has a rule against drafting a defenseman, but the league does have a rule that you must start 3 attack, 3 midfield and a team defense.

We have the three game rule to correct a players position in case the official team roster has it incorrect.

So then, are these defenseman unstartable unless/until they get a corrected position of attack or midfield?

The league is maturing a bit and there is less deadwood held on rosters. Fewer marignal seniors held on rosters, but are available for the draft, who's points might easily be replaced by underclassmen. Solid point producing JR and SO talent is harder to find in (and quickly taken from) the draft pool. Of course, there's always a fresh batch of freshman to draft, but how many Syracuse, Maryland, UVA, Hopkins, freshman can one team have (ugh - I think my limit was three), as the highly rated just seem to cue up on deep rosters.

No. Grabbing a D-man is legit and they are startable. The three game rule is for when a position is contested. Also, it bears mentioning that establishing positions is critical for a "real A" being played as an M. A D being played as an M is a non-issue.

Technically, I believe Constabile is listed as a Long Stick Middie. Thought that it just might pay off having an LSM who scored 72 Goals / 77 Assists in HS on my roster..if he starts to produce maybe he'll get a start!

A couple of notes on the draft.

First, nice job Matt.

I am not sure its the time each pick gets as our collective inability to do our homework.

There were players drafted on teams not on the list. Players drafted who were already taken. My contribution was to say the UNC defense was taken when it was available. That did not help. I figure we probabaly lost about 20 minutes with time outs and so on. Maye if there was less time there would be better prep I don't know but it would help if we all were more alert.

My pleasure and... I agree. Better prep and organization for the individual coaches would help. With this said, this is tough to legislate. The only thing I think we can do is have stiffer penalties than "you need to catch-up" and... Maybe this is something we should think about.

I had the thought that maybe we should start the draft earlier (e.g. 10 days earlier) and just do the, so to speak, pre-draft as the real draft. In our drafts, there are basically just over 100 picks. If we had a pick every hour over 10 days with the times to pick only being between 10 AM and 10 PM (e.g. 12 hours each day), we could do 120 picks in 10 days. So, for example, first pick is at 10 AM on February 1st. Second pick is at 11 AM on february 1st. Third pick etc. The last pick on February 1st would start at 9PM and would be the 12th pick of the day. The next pick would be due by 11 AM on February 2nd. Make sense?

I think this would be more relaxed, enjoyable, we'd have less "mistakes", etc. And, as an idea for a better penalty (as spoken to above), if a player picks "Mikey Powell", they can't "catch up" until the end of the day. i.e. If a person makes a mis-pick, they can't repick until 10PM after everyone else has picked that day. What do you think?

Its funny when I'm on the computer I'd love to have it spread out. But for those out of town people me for example it would kill. The bottom line and I'm at fault sometimes is you have to be prepared. If your prepared you should be able to make your pick in 30 seconds if your not prepared its impossible. Id say shorten pick time to say 30 seconds and two times a draft (for example0 you get an extra minute. So those times you really have to think it out you have chance.

I think that having a longer slow roll draft before the "timed" draft would get that many more picks completed ahead of time. This is a good idea.

Having a one hour timeslot, I think is a bad idea, no accounting for everyones ability to get on-line in the time slot given.

I have to laugh about a "get tougher" approach towards those that don't prepare or meet the deadlines. Just look at all the drops and roster corrections that happened after the deadline heading into the draft......without any penalty. All those players could have been replaced in the add/drop period instead of with earlier draft picks....that would be a penalty.

Tough balance between running a tight ship and keeping it fun and friendly.

Without penalties there is not a lot of incentive to meet deadlines or being properly prepared to only attempt to draft eligible players. The "timed" draft can really get messed up when drafters are unprepared and those that know who's eligilble or not have to police the action. Policing the action takes time away from consideration of who you're going to pick when it's your turn.

P.S. How many teams/picks did Matnum have to make because a representative for that team wasn't there? Only Matnum knows for sure.

I'm actually suggesting getting rid of the timed draft completely.

Agreed. But if there's enough of a heads-up (e.g. a week), the relevant picker should be able to coordinate, get someone to make the pick for him or otherwise. Keep in mind, a person would be picking once every day and a half. And, worse case scenario, they can always pick "late" so to speak.

I sent an e-mail to people on a saturday night saying Add/Drops were due 24 or 48 hours later or so after limited to no contact from me in a year. Not everyone checks their e-mail so often and... I thought it was the right thing to be flexible on this issue. You can disagree, laugh or otherwise. But I felt and feel it was the right thing to do.

I think we all did a great job picking all of these guys in two hours. The draft is supposed to be FUN and other than starting your lineup each week there isn't much to being part of the league as a participant. So I don't think we should build in any additional contraints next year or it will be more a point of stress for all rather than excitement.

But from an adminstration standpoint I can see how it may be stressfull. And better preparation by all will help (including myself)

I'm for no changes to the draft format next year.

To add: I'm in a fantasy football keeper league (in our 9th season) with some friends and friend of friends Each year there are two groups of people:
1 - Guys that no matter what time the draft starts are always saying "hurry up - pick already" like the place is on fire - even though the team has two minutes per pick. They are continually stressed out the entire time. And the draft ends in a couple of hours and the next day they want a whole new set of rules, and complain. Its like they are put-out being there.
2 - Guys who realize "this is what the league is about" - "the draft". Get prepared but realize you will mess up once or twice and enjoy yourself. Get some food and beverage and realize this is one of the few nights a year where you can take time away from family or your lady and just have fun two hours. Its kind of like those poker nights you had in your 20's that you can't seem to get going anymore. Good times.

We did alright this year - no better no worse than other years. (I know that's easy for me to say since I'm not the Commish cleaning up the messes :) today)

Oh yeah - I love the pre-draft ! We have it in football but you can't really control the pace of it - you just take what you can get.

For instance in this league last year we were a full round ahead on the pre-draft by Friday. But sometimes you're scouting players in the DR and ...well you have to wait.

considering so much of the league is based on the draft, the vast majority fo us enjoy the draft, i think it makes sense to elongate the draft. e.g. why not have a 3 month draft?

I like the one week rolling start approach used because: 1 - You know who has returned to school and who has left, e.g. Tyler Granelli leaving 'Cuse, 2- Who has returned from injury or who is now injuried, 3- Who did well in the first round of scrimmages and looks like a starter.

The first few weeks of January you get a good sense of how the starting rosters are shaking out. If we start drafting several weeks before the season those who pick early (who theorically should be getting an advantage) might end up being at a disadvantage due to three factors mentioned.

agreed. but everyone shares in this disadvantage. keep in mind, if we have 1 pick per day, noone would pick more than 18 days after you. also, the whole injured players issue would more closely match real NCAA recruiting. That we pick our players less than 1 week before Game #1 smells like a typical fantasy game. I think we can more closely mimic reality than this. which could be fun.

You made a decision as commish and that's fine.

I think that this is an area we can improve on for next year. Perhaps more notice on when the add/drop must be done. Firm up of the pre-draft roster prior to draft order selection and the actual allowing of draft picks to be made. People should be taking a hard look at who's on the roster, who's still playing NCAA ball for an eligibile NCAA team and who they would rather exchange for a draft pick in the upcoming draft. Failure to do so would mean that you must use the post draft add/drop period for any roster changes.

You were surprised by the number of dropped players that got drafted. Part of preparing for the draft is considering which previosly undrafted or dropped players remain eligible and may be a good draft candidate.

It also has a small impact on draft order selection process. If you rate returning rosters by assuming all seniors graduate and all underclassman remain eligible you'll likely have inaccurate results when rank the rosters. Shane Koppens being a good example of someone who got another year of eligibility but wasn't calculated into the strength of Mikelaw's returning squad (just one example).

In my opinion, the minimum preparation is to review the players on your own team and submit your "keepers" and "drops" by the deadline. So that you and eveyone else will have that information on which to create a draft list.

PATalk :) Please. I was prepared including having undrafted and dropped players as part of my sheet. I even grabbed one of them. I was surprised because coaches historically like to buy "new cars". Even if a "used car" is a great value. There's something glamorous about it. AllSports has made his teams all but exclusively from buying used cars. Historically, not so many other coaches have followed suit. This draft was different. People were grabbing used cars in the first round.

Yes. It's true that I could sort and resort each team's "Future Rank" everytime a player gets another year of eligibility, losses a year, just quits, etc. And, during the off-season, when a coach informed me that their player got another year of eligibility, i made that exact change. But, as a general rule, 1- what i don't know, I can't act on and 2-There has to be a line in time where we say "This is the Future Rank and this is the Draft Order'.

I wasn't implying that you weren't prepared. Simply stating that is an increasingly important aspect of draft preparation.

Yes, you could simply do it once after every team has submitted their pre-draft "keepers" and "drops" or the deadline for doing so has passed.

Check with Matt but I think you need to pick up another player as well.
You drafted Todd Baxter, he transferred from Fairfield to Denver.
You should be dropping Baxter and picking someone else up.

I will probably regret the Bartig dropping, he is now destined to go off SR year.
