When this comedy gem was released in 1983, I was acquainted with a friend of Wang and told him how I enjoyed the movie. Wang was surprised at my comments since the public did not like it all. I distinctly remember going to a movie house in the Columbus Circle (NYC) area twice to see it and, except for me, the place was empty! However, back then critics loved it as this is a highly creative and entertaining movie. Imagine my surprise at seeing it rated as a 100 by Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, it actually got a ✱✱✱✱✱ rating! One well deserved. To this day, I marvel at how it could have been overlooked by so many people.



You don't have to be Asian to enjoy it. This is one highly special comedy.

I heard this was a great film but I never saw it. I am a big Daniel Day Lewis fan. I can't believe I have not seen it. He was great in My Left Foot. The actual subject of the movie lived next door to friend's parents.

DDL is my favorite actor (other than the stars of Harold and Maude which I’m guessing most people don’t know who they are).

I could watch Gangs of NY every day for the rest of my life. Check that I could watch the dialogue before the first battle alone between DDL and Ralph Fiennes a billion times. Maybe a handful of other Bill the butcher scenes.

The first time I saw that movie I didn’t like it. The second time, I loved it. I can watch it over and over. It’s a great film.was it Scorsese’s last great film?

Possibly, I liked Aviator (04), not as much as Gangs, but one could make an argument it’s great. Never saw Hugo or Shutter Island but wouldn’t call Departed great. Problem is using the same actors a lot who end up falling into tropes, even ones as good as Nicholson or DiCaprio. To continually make great movies I think the director has to pluck new talent continuously.
