St Paul native Paul Molitor canned as Twinkies manager:

http://twinsdaily.com/articles.html/_/m ... ired-r7275

Last year he was voted Manager of the Year. I thought they would keep him for at least one more season. After all, why pay him if you're not going to use him? He is still owed over $3 million for the balance of his contract.

Twinkie problems began when they did not give General Manager Terry Ryan the type of personnel he wanted. Team ownership demanded a new stadium which was given to them at taxpayer expense and they have used all their profits to enrich themselves by refusing to sign top level free agent talent.

No joy in Twinkieville tonight.

Really big headlines here in Lake Wobegone as he is the area's most popular baseball player since Kirby Puckett. Am so glad to have seen him play since his high school days.

Nationals sign Patrick Corbin for 6 yrs/$140 M.

Max Scherzer was signed to a 7 Yr/$210 M deal a few years ago.

Stephen Strasburg was signed to a 7 yr/$175 M deal a few years ago.

Add it up ---> $525 MILLION committed to three players (over the course of the contracts)!

Over a HALF A BILLION DOLLARS!!!

Anybody think they're actually gonna win the Series?

Harper and Machado still unsigned. Verlander latest player to publicly speak out about it. Welcome to the new world of fiscal restraint, analytics, and guaranteed contracts fellas! No sympathy here.

Machado - got paid, got opt out.
Harper - got paid, got no trade.

All that useless b!itching & moaning about the FA market from players, agents, and union reps...STFU!

Next will come the Craig Kimbrel whining.

Well, so far, so good.

With hockey season over in Philly, we turn our longing gaze towards the Boys of Summer.

...who just opened the season with a sweep of the defending National League East champion Atlanta Braves!

Scoring 23 runs in the three game series, mostly via home run (including an opening day Grand Slam from their clean-up hitter)

So, hope, in fact, DOES spring eternal!

Stumbled unto a Roy Hobbs baseball game at Dunning Field in St Paul ~ players over 50 with one of them just turning 69 years young! Rather poor defense and slow base running but heck, it was a fun game to watch. It was rather warm today but the guys keep themselves in shape and managed to play a double header. Usually I see grand parents cheer for their grandkids in amateur ball. Today, I saw grandkids cheering for their grandpas.

Chatted with a lady who said she loved listening to her dad and his pals as they discussed the good old days of minor league ball in rural Wisconsin. Players like Joe Torre, Hank Aaron, and so many others spent a couple of seasons there and local folks cherish those memories.

MLB is great. But the real game is still being played in the sandlots of Brooklyn and in fields all throughout the USA.

As a former sandlot pitcher from Brooklyn, and a long standing former player/coach, I can say in truth that a good catcher is the cornerstone of a winning team (case in point: NY Yankees with greats like Dickey, Berra, Howard, Munson, Posada). In a few years some college and pro scouts are going to take a good, close look at that kid.

Well, Brookie, you'll get no argument from me about that. The kid with the catcher's mit in the MOOSE uniform would be me in this picture of the LL All-Star team.

Gotta have a good catcher, vital part of the team...I loved it.
That kid does too, he's all about it.

Kool!

Definitely a future Bill Dickey in that pic. When I was a kid growing up in God's Country, my dad said Dickey was the greatest catcher he ever saw. As a legendary semi pro sidewinder in his day, he well knew the importance of good catching.
