Rivals was a great event and Corrigan continues to support public schools but it was not indicative of how teams will look come spring. A large number of underclassman played to get a first look and fill rosters, winter sports were in session, the weather was cr*p . That said, the winners should be congratulated as they persevered.

Any updates on opening weekend scrimmages?

It would seem that if this outbreak is controlled in the coming weeks that the MPSSAA has not ruled out resuming competition. Perhaps wishful thinking, but they’ve gone to the trouble of publishing a memo today.

The MPSSAA fully supports the leadership of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and will make the necessary modifications to interscholastic athletics in our member public high schools as outlined below.

Athletics Status Memo, 3.13.20.
Effective immediately:

All interscholastic athletic teams are required to cancel all team practices until schools are reopened which at the earliest will be March 30, 2020. After schools reopen, interscholastic athletic teams may not practice until they are authorized by their respective local educational agency to resume practices.

All interscholastic athletic contests shall be cancelled through April 6, 2020. April 6, 2020, becomes the first available play date for scheduling consideration. All schedules after April 6, 2020, must meet the weekly limitations as detailed in the MPSSAA Handbook.

All interscholastic teams should reconsider contests after April 6, 2020 that may include more than 250 individuals.

All interscholastic athletic teams should reconsider any opponents after April 6, 2020 that may be out-of-state.

The MPSSAA State Basketball Championships remain postponed until further notice. The MPSSAA will remain vigilant regarding interscholastic athletics and the health and safety of students and school communities.

Just a guess from someone who worked for 40 years for BCPS with no inside knowledge: schools will not reopen between now and June.

Pains me to think about the kids this week as it would've been MPSSA playoffs. They have worked so hard to get to this point, and I can only imagine how they must feel. Stay strong out there. This is not your legacy. Your body of work is your legacy. Hoping many of the seniors will take it to the next level and get the chance to play again collegiately. Praying the underclassmen get their chance to shine in 2021. No matter, we will all never take it for granted anymore will we. Stay safe and healthy out there!

Who lost the most to graduation in 2020? Who will return the strongest squad? Who are the players to watch? What predictions do you have for 2021 season?

Let's all look forward to better times ahead...

How many MIAA athlete-students will end up in public schools when parents balk at paying about what it costs to attend the University of Maryland for the distance learning program that private schools are putting together, particularly when sports, an important consideration, may or may not be happening next year.

I think the privates have a better handle of on-line learning than the publics do. At least that is what I'm hearing from all over. But, the big question is, is it worth 30k? I've never thought the privates are worth that even when they had a full program. Schools like Hereford and Towson offer outstanding programs at no cost. How's the saying go, "you get out of school what you put into into."

The privates do have a much better handle on the online portion. Most have online portals they have been using for years. More college-like. A few friends teach at Hereford hs and said their time the past couple mos has been a mess.

The privates that cost 30k per year are not for everyone. They have you paying for more than the education. It’s the plant and facilities you pay for too.

Catholic schools are about half that (and less some places) so they are a relative value when all is considered.

Just going with Baltimore County here...
1. Hereford - top dawg until knocked off the perch (I think Dulaney would've done that this spring had it not been canceled)
2. Catonsville - the best team no one is talking about. Talent is off the charts in several positions. They would've made some big waves in 2020.
3. Towson - solid nucleus coming back from a team that won JV title in 2018. New staff never had a chance to show what they can do in 2020
4. Dulaney - it's a crime the 2020 season was canceled. Over 15 talented seniors graduate, but I'm sure they'll reload.
5. Perry Hall - this time will make some waves in 2021. The talent is there to make a good run at it.
6. Franklin - tough group of grinding kids in 2021, don't sleep on them, they have talent in spots, and athleticism in other areas.

Personally, I see it as a 3-dog race, but losing a full season could shake things up. Who will be hungry to get out and make their mark?

MPSSAA announces plans for prep sports in 2021

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association released its plan for the completion of abbreviated fall, winter and spring sports seasons in 2021, from Feb. 1 through June 19.

According to the “Roadmap for Return to Interscholastic Athletics and Extracurricular Activities — Two-Semester Plan,” the sports seasons would be conducted in the following manner:

• Winter sports (basketball, wrestling, indoor track and field) — Practice and reconditioning, Feb. 1-21; competition season, Feb. 22-March 27.

• Fall sports (football, soccer, volleyball, cross country, golf) — Practice and reconditioning, March 15-April 4; competition season, April 5-May 8.

• Spring sports (baseball, softball, lacrosse, track and field, tennis) — Practice and reconditioning, April 26-May 16; competition season, May 17-June 19.

A timetable for state tournaments, should they be conducted, will be released at a later date.

Spring sports get shafted two years in a row, MPSSA! Why not give the spring sports 2-3 more weeks since they lost their entire season in 2020? Seasons overlap, kids and some coaches may miss up to 2 weeks of the next season they participate in. This could've been better. Oh well, I guess it's better than nothing...I hope.

Also hearing no state tournaments, only county "tournaments" will occur if any. Let the kids play!

Seems like the nation-wide reoccurring theme is the public system saying "no" and some private venture saying "yes". Maybe a private venture will create a tourney for the public schools or something similar.

Frederick County Public Schools pushes back start of sports season

Image

Frederick County Public Schools pushed back the scheduled start of its winter sports season Wednesday due to key coronavirus metrics being at or near all-time highs.

The winter season, featuring basketball, wrestling swimming and diving and indoor track and field, was scheduled to begin on Jan. 4, but will now begin on Jan. 19 — if the health metrics allow for it to safely happen, per FCPS officials.

The change will shorten the season from six weeks to four, but will not impact the scheduled start of the fall sports season once the winter season concludes on Feb. 13.

Practice for the fall season, which includes football, soccer, volleyball, golf, cross country and field hockey would begin on that same day, with competitions beginning roughly a month later and a six-week season concluding on April 17.

A spring season — baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, outdoor track and field — will then run from April 17 to June 19.

There will be no regional or state playoffs, as all competitions will take place strictly between county teams and athletes. Even some larger-scale county championship events, like the wrestling, indoor track and field and swimming and diving championships, will not take place since they require too many people to be in one place.

"I just think it's sad, and you feel for the kids," Middletown girls basketball coach Amy Poffenbarger said. "You look around at other states that are doing it and thriving, and you wonder what the difference is between living in Ohio and Maryland."

In March, Poffenbarger's team at Middletown was scheduled to play in a Class 2A state semifinal at Towson University before the event was postponed and eventually canceled due to the pandemic.

"The girls want to prove themselves. They want to show how good we were and how good we are and what we could have been this year," Poffenbarger said. "There's a sense of frustration ... They just want to be given the chance to prove that."

The delay in the winter season was announced as Frederick County reported its highest one-day total of new coronavirus infections (189) Wednesday and related hospitalizations across the state approached their all-time high (1,776).

The positivity rate in Frederick County, which is presently higher than the overall positivity rate in Maryland (7.36 percent), ticked up to 9.09 percent, which is as high as it has been since June 2.

"We have taken a cautious approach to beginning winter sports," said Kevin Kendro, the FCPS supervisor of sports and extra curricular activities who meets weekly with his Return to Play subcommittee and regularly consults with officials from the Frederick County Health Department for guidance.

After the Board of Education approved a plan in early November for FCPS to conduct limited sports seasons, winter sports teams and athletes have been participating in skill-based activities that stop short of a full, traditional practice, even though there are opportunities for small-group, intra-squad scrimmages.

In order to reduce possible transmission of the virus, everyone must wear a mask to participate, and athletes have been working in small groups of three to five people.

FCPS has stayed with these activities, even as other counties and jurisdictions in the state have pulled back and suspended sports activities due to rising virus metrics.

"We put a lot of thought and effort and collaboration directly with the Frederick County Health Department in making these recommendations and decisions," Kendro said.

The plan is to stay with the skill-based activities for now with the hope of resuming more traditional practices on Jan. 11, one week prior to the revised start of the season, Kendro said.

"Something is better than nothing," Poffenbarger said. "Obviously, I am frustrated because I want these kids to have something, and I feel like it kind of keeps getting taken out from underneath our feet. Who knows what is going to happen next? You kind of just try and stay positive and make [the team activities] a mental-health break. Let the girls have something to come to as often as they will let us in here."
