~~The MIAA “A” 2021~~

Post by thatsmell »

I posted this over at the Laxnumbers.com forum and will post it here too:

Considering returners and talent lost, who are the favorites?

CH, StM and McD are all deep but lose some big-time contributors.
BL was young and may return some talent from injury.
St. P loses some athleticism.
How does Gilman do with a new coach?
Can Loyola and Spalding continue to grow?
JC returns a few talented youngsters.
Can Severn wrangle some talent away from the publics?

How does the league shape up in 2020?!

And...Congrats to Coach Christie from Severn and Coach King from John Carroll for coaching the Baltimore team to the UA Underclass Championship last week!

This season, 2019, I was sure that McDonogh was going to be dominant. Early on, I was right. And then... Not so much. Hesitant to even guess for 2020...

For the record, I'm still a little stumped about what happened to McD in 2019.

Cole Herbert returns for The Hall. He would be a showpiece for any program. He is a big, tough kid who is well rounded and makes kids around him better.

For the record, I'm still a little stumped about what happened to McD in 2019.

I wish there was a McD insider on here who could explain last season. They won against Culver going away, then proceeded to lose a ton of inside MIAA games, often by a lot. They actually fought St. A's even until the end, and St. A's had a great team last year. McD could be that unusual MIAA team that performs better against the best OOC than other MIAA teams, but then has trouble inside the league.

My call on the MIAA has always been the coaching is superlative and therefore makes playing inside the league very difficult. It just could be that Hilgartner finds an extra gear to get his kids pumped up to play outside the league?

Without mentioning names, there was an MIAA coach whom I felt had an uncanny knack of losing to strong OOC even when he had better horses. Every year, he would invariably lose to good OOC opponents, then he would do well inside the MIAA. Those same MIAA opponents would beat the OOC team whom his team lost to...

Anyway, looks to me like the MIAA next year has some very strong FOGO's across the board...that will help tremendously. New coach at Gilman, whom many here know very well in John Nostrant.

I'm very curious about Gilman. Talented kids and a coach who knows how to leverage talented kids.

Baltimore Sun All MEtro teams:

https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/hig ... story.html
First team

Gable Braun
McDonogh, junior, faceoff specialist-midfielder
» Three-year starter dominated faceoffs, winning 225 of 327 (70%) to consistently secure possession for the No. 5 Eagles (12-5)
» Equally adept at playing ahead or behind the whistle; won 17 of 21 faceoffs in pivotal win over No. 2 St. Mary’s during playoff march
» North Carolina commit led the team in ground balls for the second straight season with 106
» Said McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner: “Gable’s intense competitiveness filtered through the entire team. Perfectionist at his craft, he worked outside of normal practice time throughout the season to improve.”

Blake Gable
Boys’ Latin, junior, defenseman
» Three-year starter excelled with added responsibilities this season; asked to cover top attackmen in leading a defense that yielded eight goals per game
» Consistently brought smart play, tremendous footwork and decisive instincts to make standout plays on defense
» North Carolina commit finished the season with 39 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers
» Said Boys’ Latin coach Brian Farrell: “Blake was a difference-maker for our team this season. We put him on the opposing team’s top threat in every game and based a lot of our defense on him winning his matchup.”

Michael Harmeyer
Severna Park, junior, attackman
» Three-year varsity player scored a staggering 99 goals to go with eight assists to lead the No. 8 Falcons (19-1) to their fourth straight state crown
» Lightning-quick dodger and pure finisher scored three or more goals in 19 games; totaled nine goals in state tournament wins over Churchill and Howard
» Committed to Virginia; goes into senior season with 136 goals and 15 assists for career
» Said Severna Park coach Dave Earl: “Mikey’s performance this season was something to remember. He has the ability to break his defender down at any moment. He was covered by the opponent’s best defender every game and always rose to the challenge.”

Colin Kelley
Marriotts Ridge, senior, goalie
» Four-year standout, two-year captain and All-Metro second-team pick last season makes the jump to the first team after leading No. 12 Mustangs (14-2) to Howard County crown
» Set program marks in career saves (608) and wins (49) after going 14-2 with 122 saves for a .710 save percentage and 3.02 goals against average this season
» Mercer commit played major role in two Howard County titles and program’s first state championship last season
» Said Marriotts Ridge coach Tony Incontrera: “Colin has been a constant with our program the past four years. He was always a great goalie, but he has grown as a leader each season. Colin consistently made the big saves in big situations.”

Daniel Kelly
Calvert Hall, junior, attackman
» Three-year varsity player, captain finished with 42 goals and 30 assists for 72 points to lead the MIAA A Conference champion Cardinals in scoring
» Steadying influence with uncanny game sense; registered three or more points in 14 of 15 games played and had seven goals and three assists in two playoff wins
» North Carolina commit takes 123 goals and 69 assists into his senior season
» Said Calvert Hall coach (and Daniel’s father) Bryan Kelly: “I think he was our leader on the field in every aspect of getting everybody where they needed to be. And he just had this ability to put the ball in the back of the net when we needed it most.”

Jack Koras
Loyola Blakefield, junior, attackman
» Three-year varsity player, captain thrived in new role on attack to lead the No. 4 Dons (10-7) with 46 goals and 28 assists
» Midfielder in first two seasons, brought high-end athleticism, toughness and power with precise shot
» Maryland commit scored at least one goal in every game this season with a standout four-goal, two-assist performance against McDonogh
» Said Loyola Blakefield coach Gene Ubriaco: “We needed a No. 1 guy on attack and he filled that void for us wonderfully. He’s an extremely tough competitor who only knows how to go at one speed — all in all the time.”

Grant Mitchell
Calvert Hall, senior, midfielder
» Four-year varsity player (freshman season in Georgia), captain and repeat first-team selection added layers to his game each of his three seasons with Cardinals
» Area’s most dynamic offensive midfielder had 32 goals and 21 assists, improved drastically at the defensive end
» Ohio State commit enjoyed three-goal, two-assist performance in title game; finished with 111 points (67 goals, 44 assists) in three years at Calvert Hall
» Said Bryan Kelly: “Once we got into league play, Grant shifted into fifth gear — he was ready to go. … The other aspect of his game is he really became a very good, strong defensive midfielder. He’s a complete player and always had some big goals when we needed them.”

Jack Sawyer
Calvert Hall, senior, attackman
» Four-year varsity player, captain scored 39 goals and added 28 assists in helping the Cardinals to a third straight MIAA A crown
» Showed a knack of stepping up in biggest moments; registered three or more points in 14 games with one-goal, five-assist performance in title game
» Maryland commit started career at midfield and finished with 81 goals and 52 assists
» Said Bryan Kelly: “He’s got great hands — can go right or left equally well. He’s an outstanding dodger and he always plays within himself. What I love most is he’s a competitor, so if we’re struggling, he tends to dig down deep and makes something happen.”

Will Tominovich
St. Mary’s, junior, defenseman
» Came into the season with one career varsity start and emerged as the area’s top newcomer on defense
» Leaned on agility, tenacity and smart positioning to consistently win one-on-one challenges; anchored a defense that yielded under eight goals per game in going 8-2 in MIAA A play
» Collected 52 ground balls, had 18 caused turnovers and contributed four assists
» Said St. Mary’s coach Victor Lilly: “He takes the top attackman out of the game. It’s his footwork and he’s an exquisitely smart lacrosse player with the angles he takes on the field to cover ground.”

Mason Woodward
St. Paul’s, senior, defenseman
» Three-year varsity player, captain brought versatile defensive skills and leadership to No. 7 Crusaders (10-6)
» Game-changer totaled 78 ground balls, 33 caused turnovers, two goals and six assists this season
» Marquette commit played close defense, long-stick midfield and as a wing on faceoffs, typically covering the opponent’s best player
» Said St. Paul’s coach Trey Whitty: “Mason has the ability to completely change a game, whether that be through relentless ground ball play, his riding ability, locking down a key opponent or sparking the offense. And while that is all valued, his biggest impact was his leadership.”

Editor’s note: Because of the selection of Co-Players of the Year, The Sun chose 10 first-team players instead of the usual 11.

Second team
Jackson Bonitz, McDonogh, junior, defenseman
Parker Byrd, Calvert Hall, senior, defenseman
Logan Covey, Westminster, junior, goalie
Michael Doughty, Glenelg, senior, attackman
William Godine, Gilman, senior, midfielder
Ian Krampf, St. Mary’s, senior, attackman
Bubba Love, Westminster, senior, attackman
Connor Madsen, Patterson Mill, senior, midfielder
James Maher, Severna Park, senior, attackman
Jake Snyder, Calvert Hall, senior, defenseman
Cameron Spencer, Boys’ Latin, senior, attackman
Alex Wicks, St. Mary’s, junior, midfielder

Baltimore Sun Co-Players of the Year:

https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/hig ... story.html
BJ Burlace
St. Mary’s, senior, defenseman

Game in and game out, the senior long-stick midfielder made a positive impact. He had to be accounted for on defense, on offense, in transition, at the faceoff box and on a wing for faceoffs. Burlace’s work drove the No. 2 Saints (12-6) to a runner-up finish in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic

inRead invented by Teads
The four-year starter and captain had 12 goals, 10 assists, 71 ground balls, 21 caused turnovers and won 27 faceoffs. Throughout his career, he rarely left the field.

“We have not found a player that puts the film study in, the work in the weight room, the stickwork, the work ethic — he’s put everything together and he’s capable of running a full 48 minutes,” St. Mary’s coach Victor Lilly said.

2019 All-Metro boys lacrosse first and second teams
Burlace’s combination of skill, intensity, versatility and athleticism was difficult for opponents to match.

“I just think a long-stick middie that can affect the game on all 110 yards is really valuable,” Loyola Blakefield coach Gene Ubriaco said. “BJ’s a guy that plays wing on faceoffs, can go back and cover your best offensive player and then likely outscore him on the offensive end. When you have a player that impactful, it’s such a luxury.”

Perhaps the most vital quality Burlace brought to the Saints was leadership with his year-round commitment, positive words and fearless play setting a tone. It started in his freshman year when the Saints were rebuilding and won only one game. Lilly said Burlace’s ability to keep the players together was instrumental in the program’s success.

Cole Herbert
Calvert Hall, junior, midfielder

On a stacked team that won an unprecedented third straight MIAA A Conference championship in dominant fashion, the junior midfielder managed to stand out. He did it with his athleticism. He did it with his versatility. He did it with his confidence. He did it with his competitiveness.

Herbert, who stood out both ends of the field and as a wing on faceoffs, finished his third varsity season with 16 goals, 39 assists and 42 ground balls as the No. 1 Cardinals (17-1) went a perfect 12-0 in league play. In addition to being named Co-Player of the Year, he was also the recipient of the C. Markland Kelly Award earlier this month as the top high school lacrosse player in Maryland.

“I think he’s the best two-way middie in the country. I can’t imagine anybody being better than him right now in high school lacrosse,” Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly said. “He just had a presence about him in that he played with not an arrogance, but with confidence. The guys really looked up to him, and he led by example.”

Also a standout wide receiver for the Calvert Hall football team, Herbert brought a temperament to the lacrosse field that set a fierce tone. He capped the season with a two-goal, three-assist performance in the Cardinals’ 15-7 win over St. Mary’s for the league crown.

“From my standpoint, Cole is the motor of a Corvette that keeps Calvert Hall running, and the faster he goes, the faster that team goes,” St. Mary’s coach Victor Lilly said. “He’s a player that pushes our team to its limits because he pushes you around and competes hard. To me, he is the one person that most makes the Calvert Hall team go.”

That may well be a good thing. Gilman may get a fresh look from a handful of kids each year.

From what I understand he's well-connected in the local scene, despite all the years in Philly.

However, it should be understood that several schools have amped up the recruiting to previously unknown levels in MIAA lax.

BL, yes. I feel like the MIAA has some serious FOGO talent now, spread across many teams. A few years ago, I felt that this was a real weakness in the MIAA for the OOC games.

Didn't know where to post this (if someone wants to create a new thread, feel free!). national high school acrosse showcase, always a decent way to see which teams might excel in 2020.

I notice a new entrant this year, among many new entrants. Old Deerfield Academy out of the NE West 1, a team which historically has shied from OOC games (though began to break out of their shell this year somewhat...and lost, to Torrey Pines). Will be interesting to see if my good man Bubba Fairman comes up the road to cheer his squad on!

Nice to see 7 of 11 "A" schools sending a squad to participate.
BL
CH
G
JC
LB
McD
StP,

Pretty cool tourney idea. Especially when "me first" club play generally dominates the summer. Would be awesome if it was in-season and we got real varsity, full teams.

It's indeed a good opportunity for college coaches to see kids playing within a more familiar team oriented system rather than the 'see-me' play of much of club ball. And it's a great way for the HS coaches to get a sense of some of the players they will have next spring who may be stepping up in roles in replacement of the graduates, as well as those coming up from JV etc. But, you're right about 'full teams'; some kids don't participate for a whole variety of reasons including that it costs $300 a head, beach time with family, etc.

Kids and coaches play to win, but it's not really the point of the tourney.

Whoa...I saw that Deerfield won the tourney! That's good for them. And a surprise and a half to be honest since I assume they were missing their incoming PG's? Or perhaps they did have their incoming PG's.

Any color from anyone? I know of one team which was missing it's top four rising seniors, but if anyone attended, that would be great.

Deerfield didn’t just win but completely dominated, I think their closest game was 5 goals. I am sure they are not unhappy given years of snark ( Peter Brown, or is it Steven Ridgley?) about how they don’t play anyone OOC. Obvious caveats that these are not just not real games but all teams don’t have their full rosters. Generally good showing from MIAA, CH and McD both made semis losing to Deerfield and Chaminade. I don’t know if Deerfield had any incoming PGs, they wouldn’t yet be enrolled in the school so it would be a little weird as they would literally have never played a single practice with the team but as this is a summer tourney they could in theory play even if they weren’t enrolled. Of course that would only be 3-4 players out of 35, though of course very good ones.

Deerfield had a few PGs out there, but no one really stood out as a superstar. One out of Cali setup some nice goals in the Championship. They looked to be strong players.
