As of this morning, the mortality rate for COVID-19 is 6.6% in Italy, 2.7% in the US, and 3.4% worldwide according to the WHO (source: https://time.com/5798168/coronavirus-mortality-rate/) compared to 0.1% for the flu. Heard SUNYAC Lacrosse schedule will be reworked to get the games in.. should have more info after break. Fingers crossed!
Re: SUNYAC 20
The NCAA already cancelled all winter and spring championships.

I think what the OP is trying to say is that it is overblown for the ATHLETES. Which it is.dp68 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:28 pmAs of this morning, the mortality rate for COVID-19 is 6.6% in Italy, 2.7% in the US, and 3.4% worldwide according to the WHO (source: https://time.com/5798168/coronavirus-mortality-rate/) compared to 0.1% for the flu. -The mortality rate for those 0-9 is 0.0%
-* 10-39 is .2%
-* 40-49 is .4%
-* 50-59 is 1.3%
-* 60-69 is 3.9%
-* 70-79 is 8.0%
* 80+ is 14.8 - 21.9%
Being a young man myself and former college player, this is incredibly frustrating when thinking about it from an 18 to 20-something year old lens. Folks our age are NOT at a high risk of death. It is exactly like the flu for younger people. However, as you know, it is difficult for people 18-30 to think outside of their own perspective.
Stay safe!

Sending a shoutout to the Potsdam Men's Lacrosse senior class. You worked hard through several difficult seasons, stuck together, showed leadership, friendship, and a will to pull this program together for future classes. Bravo. We all wish we could see the entire season play out, but alas, that's not going to be the case.
AND a shoutout to all SUNYAC seniors and teammates who's season was cut short. Life is full of curveballs. It sucks. And then you move on.

Unfortunately SUNYAC cancels winter sports. Will decide on Spring sports in the future. Sounds fairly bleak.
Re: SUNYAC 20
With Friday's decision by King Cuomo to push decision of sports down to a local level for High School Sports, spark SUNYAC to make plans for Spring?
Let's hope so, they lost last year and with a 2/21 start the boys could get in a ten game season. Fingers crossed.

1st day of classes:
New Paltz - 1/19
Oneonta - 1/25
Cortland - 2/1
Geneseo - 2/1
Plattsburgh - 2/1
Oswego - 2/1
Potsdam - 2/1
Brockport - 2/8
Waiting for 2/15 locks these spring student-athletes in for the semester and forces many of them to pay room and board.

Re: SUNYAC 20
This is just one of so many cynical decisions made during the last year that are for the benefit of older people/colleges/companies directly at the expense of younger people. We talk a great game in this country about how our young people are the future, but you wouldn't know it by the way we've collectively treated that demographic in 2020-2021. I understand that for some colleges this is an existential moment, but I don't think this is the right way - or an ethical way - to address that circumstance.SpiritInTheStick wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 12:49 pm1st day of classes:

There is an incredible thread on this issue here: https://twitter.com/Alex_Washburne/stat ... 8642296832. Worth reading and considering just what the heck we've been doing.
Re: SUNYAC 20
Worth discussing, but you are referencing a guy who is intellectually way over his head in terms of the ‘ethical’ arguments he is making. It is not an issue of old vs young.JBFortunato wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 1:29 pmThis is just one of so many cynical decisions made during the last year that are for the benefit of older people/colleges/companies directly at the expense of younger people. I think Colleges should make an effort to allow athletics and other campus activities to take place. I think it can be done safely with students in mind.
I think he misses the point as to why we are making these sacrifices.
The most important reason we are doing all of this is to ensure that there remains a properly functioning health care system for everyone, not one triaging patients with life and death decisions based solely on capacity.

Re: SUNYAC 20
The SUNYAC unlike other conferences in D3 is actually in some of the best positions in the country.
1. No worry about crossing state lines for competition. Everyone falls under the New York State Guidelines
2. Everyone is on the same testing standard now.
3. The conference is small enough in MLAX to allow a full league schedule
While there is obviously more to this at the institution level (staffing, roster sizes, facilities, bussing etc) I feel like unlike other Northeast conferences (NESCAC, NEWMAC, CCC etc) they are all starting on the same page.

NYS high schools have green light for sports. Hoping SUNY follows with allowing spring sports! They will have testing protocols and quarantine heading back to school in the next few weeks and also testing on campus. So hopefully that will be what allows SUNY to go forward. Son added to the SUNY app pile. Transferring from a MAC Freedom school to Bport to change major and save mucho $$$$$ being a commuter..
