Nosey -- Don't have any info from the coaching staff on the 2020 squad.....five all-NCAC players return including two D (Rathell and Taylor), G (Sichenza), FOGO (Perciballi) anda D-middie (Mikes). No doubt the Bishops have lost a lot in the last two graduating classes and I would not try to compare the talent with the Big Red. They do have two 20+ goal scorers returning (Will Anton and Lucas Smith) and Hasenberg, Johnston and Gellen all played a fair amount on the offensive side.

IL site shows 10 first years (see below). Don't know of any transfers.....got to believe Plantholt wouldn't have taken on that schedule if he felt he was in a total rebuild.

Name Pos Class High School
Joshua Brandes A 2019 Central Kitsap High School
Chase Fisher G 2019 East Grand Rapids High School
Jared Friesen A 2019 Trabuco Hills High School
Noah Gels A 2019 Ridgefield High School
Matthew McKnight D 2019 St Peter's
Cam Miller D 2019 Eastlake High School
Teigue Norman D 2019 DeMatha Catholic High School
Hassan Radda M 2019 Dublin Coffman High School -
Michael Walsh FO 2019 Duxbury High School
George Whitney G 2019 Tabor Academy

Ned -- Also IWU is just as good/better than DeSales...every year Bishops play a far tougher schedule.

Oldtime ... thanks for the info on the Bishops. And I'll agree with your DeSales / IWU comparison.... my point was that I wouldn't lob them (either one of them) in with the likes of RIT, Salisbury and York.

We both know the bottom line is are you ready to play "the big game" .. #1 and #2. That's what it's about. And Caravana has obviously gotten the Big Red ready these past many years!

Good luck to the Bishops this year and hoping both teams represent the NCAC well this year!

Yes, it looks like OWU will play a terrific OOC schedule. The thing is, last season OWU lost eight games, didn't beat any of those top-ranked teams, and also lost to RPI and to Messiah. OWU's OOC wins were over Otterbein, Alma and John Carroll. So I think it's reasonable to ask if the Bishops are biting off more than they can chew. Having said that, pre-season expectations for the 2018 OWU team were fairly low, and that team surprised to the upside, knocking off Salisbury and beating Denison twice. Denison must be the clear pre-season favorite in 2020 to win the NCAC; but if there is a conference team capable of knocking off the Big Red, you've gotta think that team would be OWU.

Hey Fann! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Yes the 2018 Bishops did best the Big Red twice (reg season and NCAAs - the Big Red won the Conference championship game) but I'm not so sure they were as "under the radar" as you let on. Afterall Leyden, Schulte and Hamblett were now seniors and All NCAC players as were Tennant and Hildebrand and if memory serves me OWU had their starting goalie, also now a senior, from 2 seasons before return to the field that Spring so they really weren't the "rough diamonds" you characterized them as previously. Those were all established collegiate players who went on to AA status! That team had great leadership.

Agreed, OWU is always a team DU needs to respect... and they do ... regardless of the previous years success but I'm not so sure you can equate the 2020 team to the very successful 2018 team. At least not at this early stage. That team had known quality. I know this Big Red fan respected and appreciated that roster from the outset.

Kenyon posts 2020 schedule....pretty similar to last season, when they went 11-6. Roanoke is the only potential Top 20 match-up on the OOC slate.

What’s the rundown on the Lords for this upcoming season!

Denison roster posted. A total of 51 players listed which includes 21 freshman! That’s the biggest first year class in a number of years ... makes sense I guess because they graduated one of the largest (and one of the most talented) senior classes last year in many years.

Looks like they also added 2 transfers (at least 1 of them from a D1 program) and 2 previous players returning from injury after missing their entire junior seasons. Good to see that. Hopefully between the new guys, the transfers and the returners, Coach Caravana can “reload” and find a talented supporting cast to help AA Peter Pittroff maintain the offensive production they have enjoyed the previous years after the graduation last Spring of 4 multi year offensive starters, including 2 AA - #s 1 and #2 as well as #s 11 and #9 who were All NCAC in their own rights. However I expect the defense to be stout from the get go - as the majority of the key pieces return, including 2 AA (#s 14 and 24) and multiple All NCAC (#7, #50 and #22) which I’m looking to anchor the team while the “new” offense figures it out - and establishes their own identity. Which I’m confident they will.

Excited to see we’re getting closer and closer to a new season ... can’t wait!

GO BIG RED!

OWU posted its schedule. Open with RIT in Rochester, followed by Illinois Wesleyan at home. Salisbury at the National Lacrosse Center in Sparks, MD, followed by York and Franklin & Marshall at the Mustang Classic. No Messiah, and the annual game on Long Island appears to be dead and buried. Oh yeah, the regular season ends at Denison. https://battlingbishops.com/sports/mens ... edule/2020
Denison must be the clear favorite to win the NCAC this year, but there's a reason they play the games.

Will Filliaut transferred from JU (D1) to the big Red...he’s legit and should fit in nicely with Pitroff..

Being a Big Red fan I'm certainly glad to hear that. But I'm going to dampen my enthusiasm until I see that played out on the field. To be clear I don't mean to disparage anyone - past or present players - but Denison have had a D1 player transfer in their Sophomore year the past 2 years and for whatever reason they never made the transition successfully. Neither saw much playing time and neither were even on the roster the next year. And if memory serves me 1 came from a Top D1 program.

What's my point? That Top 10 D3 programs are very competitive and just because you were a D1 commit out of HS doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have instant success at a highly competitive D3 program. Every situation is unique and nothing is guaranteed! So I would employ some patience and let the kid play his first game before throwing his name out there especially throwing it out in the same realm as Pittroff.

Trust me, I hope this young man transitions seamlessly and immediately helps replace the enormous amount of offensive talent that graduated last year and gives #18 a AA caliber playing partner! So here's wishing Will great success with his playing career at Denison... he's landed at a GREAT place!

Oberlin posts their schedule....Interesting development is that they are taking on York College at the Lacrosse HOF! Good for the Yoemen....Is Topher Grossman building a program that can compete on the east coast?

I’m a new guy to the NCAC. I enjoy all the Denison and OWU banter, but for this thread not to mention this conference really take off, there needs to be more parity in the conference. The stronger the weaker teams becom, the better for us all (even if it means the Big Red lose their presumptive mantle). Another way of saying - go get’em Coach G and the Yeoman!

Inside Lacrosse released its Preseason All American list. The Big Red landed 3 on that list ... no surprise as all 3 were AA last year. So we have at Att #18 Pittroff named 2nd team and two Def, #14 Dyson and #24 Broderick were HM. Won't be surprised if #7 Bartozzi makes it at year's end as well as he was named the IMLCAs All-West Region Defensive Player of the Year last year. How he didn't make AA is beyond me. In addition think the Goalie #50 McKenney has a shot as well. If that pans out the Big Red will have a heck of D this year! G, 2 close and 1 LSM. Plus #18 running the offense!

I'm getting excited just writing this .... roll the ball out! Let's see what we got!

Go Big Red!

I’m a long time NCAC fan, hoping for more parity in the conference someday. While I love seeing Denison and OWU succeed... any word on Kenyon, Witt, Wooster, Oberlin this year?

That's my concern with the NCAC ....parity hasn't happened fast enough. Teams like Kenyon, Witt and Wooster tease us by showing signs some years of taking a step forward only to fail to progress meaningfully in subsequent years ... leaving the conference unfortunately still just a 2 horse race. And some have questioned if OWUs recent form is the harbinger of a steady decline or just a lull. I think it's the latter myself and expect one of the best rivalries in D3 lacrosse to continue to be so.... at least I hope it does. That said, if it is a bigger concern then a lull ..... what's happened? Does anyone else think perhaps OWU needs to seriously update their facilities? We know the student athlete experience these days isn't just about the playing surface and a big (old) stadium ... it's the indoor practice facilities, the locker room, the weight room, meeting rooms, study rooms .... all the supporting facilities. Look at the recent upgrades around the conference. Some are very impressive so if there is concern for OWU ... winning the recruiting battle with other teams will only become more difficult the more time passes without upgrades. But to be clear, I am not ready to write OWU off in any way. The Big Red better be ready again this year!

Everything is not all doom and gloom though .... I'm very interested to see Allegheny come into the NCAC lacrosse fold this year. Coach Pearce did a remarkable job resurrecting a long dormant Frostburg program, making them relevant in just 1 full recruiting cycle (4 yrs). He has proven he can do it and I think being located as the Eastern most school in the NCAC in PA will help him recruit some quality players... at least that's my hope. I've become a bit impatient waiting for the 2nd tier NCAC teams to make the leap we all have come to expect given the growth of the game at the HS level. A look at the roster shows coach Pearce has 26 on the roster this year ... 21 freshman .... and a very decent OOC schedule for a fist year program! Telling me Allegheny already have a stronger program then a couple of the weaker NCAC teams!

Now let's see if any of this stirs some emotion and wakes this thread up!!!! Come on people... the season is starting!

Not sure what is going on at OWU but Roanoke in the ODAC is showing signs of slipping. Last year was their worst in 10 years. I’m not sure Pilate is keeping pace, it’s very competitive and since his son graduated I’m wondering if he’s checked out. ODAC needs the 4 W&L, Lynchburg , HSC and Roanoke to all contest for a top 20 ranking. OWU and Denison have owned the conference, it’s not healthy for either team if one of them begins to slip from the national D3 conversation. Good luck to both except when Denison plays the Generals

The W&L game has always been a great test for the Big Red and brings a heightened sense of anticipation because, at least recently like this year, it's their season opener. I can’t decide who has the edge ... W&L having the benefit of having played a game or two already or Denison because there is no tape yet on the Big Red for the Generals to scout. And the competition has been that close that any little edge could mean the difference between winning and losing. One thing that hasn’t been the difference maker has been “home field advantage “ - at least not until last year when DU broke the visitors’ 6 year winning streak. I was happy about it last year of course but this year I’d like to see a trend back to the mean as this game is being contested in Lexington!

Anyway .. always a great matchup against a quality OOC opponent so I’m expecting only more of the same again this year! Good luck to both teams this season but I have to end this of course with a Go Big Red!

OWU scrimmaged at Capital. OWU had their hands full. Not sure if that means OWU is down, Cap is up, or a little of both, but it was a fairly even match up.
