Alright, turning the page on 2019, how is 2020 going to shape up for the Gulls? Lots of returners. Hows the Defense & GK look, that's my first question I want to get opinions on.

Well I’m on vacation and had some free time out by the pool. So here’s my input for 2020.
As we know, there is a lot that can happen between now and February, but here is the very early look at the team…

Attack: By far the deepest of all of positions. The gulls return all 3 starters + Moroney

Melton – 1st team USILA all American returns with some weapons. Melton finished the year with a balanced 66 goals and 52 assists for 118pts. 60 of those goals came at even strength. Melton can do it all and elevates the entire unite. He has also shown that if need be, he can run midfield. Gulls will rely on Melton to lead this group once again.

Ferrara – Gull fans/alumni knew something was special with this kid when he got playing time his freshman year. As a freshman he appeared in 12 games starting 2 of those. When he did play, he has flashes of quickness and confidence with the ball. This year he took it a step further and showed why he belongs in the lineup as a sophomore. Ferrara at times took over games (vs York for the CAC championship & Stevenson). His ability to get his hands free and get topside resulted in 69 goals for the sophomore. In addition, this should not be overlooked… Ferrara is a phenomenal rider. His effort led to 13 caused turnovers which places him 8th on the team in that category.

Armstrong – I feel like Armstrong is often overlooked because of the other names on offense. He has been steady the past 2 years and this year started in 20 games, tallying a point in every game he stepped on the field. Armstrong missed the first few games of the year and production slowed down towards the end of the year, but still had a strong year by most standards. I am curious to see how things shake out once Moroney is back though.

Moroney – ’18 starter who suffered a season ending injury and did not play in ’19. Scored 47 goals and accumulated 58 points as a starting sophomore attackman. At the very least, Moroney adds depth to an already stacked attack.

Midfield: Big shoes to fill. 1st line is gone Gwin, Pompea, Snyder, and Short

Bromwell – A year that was plagued by inconsistent play. I heard rumors that he had either been battling an injury or illness, but I wasn’t sure the extent of either. The stat lines show that not only his production was down, but he made 11 turnovers compared to last year’s 2, while shooting close to 16%. I didn’t see Jarrett create too much separation this year and shot selection was questionable at times. I expect him to bounce back next year. Did finish the season with 2 goals vs Cabrini. The Gulls will need more of that with the departure of Gwin, Snyder, and Pompea.

Wongus – Similar to Bromwell, probably a year to forget to an extent. Decrease in production from the previous year (39pts in 18’ and 17pts in 19’). I still think Emory is trying to figure out how to use his size. Like Bromwell, I would have liked him to create more separation when dodging the SSDMs, but still did a decent job of getting his hands free and shooting.

Harbottle – Those that watched the past few games understand why Harbottle is making this list. The sophomore middie showed that he can create when he has the ball. He has a quick first step and dodges with his head up. The stat lines don’t necessarily show his production, but Luke did a solid job of filling in when the second line middies struggled getting something going. A lot of his production can be credited for hockey type assists where he created and 2 passes later the ball was in the back of the net.

Demback – Listed as an attackman, but saw an increased amount of playing time on the 2nd midfield line. As you would expect from an attackman turned midfielder, the kid can finish (58% shooting) with 7 goals in limited time, despite playing in 17 games. Would like to see him lean out and increase his speed and exploit dodging the SSDM next year.

LSM: Another deep and athletic position for the Gulls

Murphy – converted to close as soon as Kness went down to a season ending injury. An absolute ground ball machine. Appeared to struggle a little bit during the beginning of the season with 1v1 defense, but take into consideration he was recovering from an ACL injury last year.

O’Callaghan – pleasantly surprised with the production from the sophomore from Anne Arundel County. This kid went from playing in 4 games and fighting for time with ’18 defensive depth (see Tucker, and Nowesnick) to playing in every game this year. Was steady all year and proved to be a solid duo with Woodward once Murphy was forced to play close.

Woodward – Very similar to O’Callaghan, another player who made the most out of their opportunities (played in 7 games last year). Quick and another vacuum for groundballs. Also a mismatch in transition where he accounted for 4 goals, including a highlight behind the back goal.

SSDM: Thanks Parker – the only graduating SSDM

Greik – An absolute tank of a dmid. 2nd team USILA all American that finished the year with 7 goals on 8 shots. At 195lbs+ he looks like a fullback when he is clearing the ball.

Ford – Aggressive SSDM who at times played a little bit too much out of control for my liking. Physical and athletic, but going for a home run check or hit at times cost him minutes in the sin bin or led to a goal. Played improved throughout the year though.

Saulino – Obviously not the same size, but Saulino’s role reminded me a lot of Mike Edwards ’05. Did a little bit of everything and that is what got him on the field as a freshman. Extremely athletic and with a 6’3” frame, I am interested to see how he develops and where he ends up settling in. With a year under his belt and some solid playing time, I could see him getting a few cracks on those offensive midfield lines. Really excited for this kid though.

Face-Off:

Malamphy – 1st team IMLCA player who was an astonishing 73% this year. The roster shows that he is indeed a senior, but during Berkman’s postgame report against Denison, Coach mentioned that Brett was given his year back by the NCAA (transfer from UMBC). If he is back, this is huge for the Gulls.

Logue – out all season, but is 57% at the X during his career on the shore.

Sweeney – Freshman who stepped him to relieve Malamphy on a few occasions. Really like what I saw from the kid out of Niskayuna. Has 2 NCAA playoff goals to his name as well.

Defense:

Apgar- USILA 1st team all-American. Really excited to see this kid develop and see what he brings to the table his junior year. He anchor on defense that compliments the play of Borkowicz and Kness. As steady as they come on the backend.

Borkowicz – Bork is heading into his senior year. Crazy.. it felt like just yesterday that he was filling in for Aaron Leeds after a controversial hit on a Cabrini player. He has been consistent since day 1 and this year being a full-time starter.

Kness – The pleasant surprise out of the group who unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury. During his first 9 games and 9 starts, Kness accumulated 23 ground balls and forced 7 turnovers. I read that Berkman even referred to him as the team’s best 1v1 defender. I am hoping Kness follows the footsteps of Murphy and returns to a healthy season following an unfortunate injury.

Goalie:

Warren – Fantastic first part of the season followed by very inconsistent and at times sloppy play for the remainder. The inability to clear the ball still sticks out in my mind (York regular season game). My person opinion was War of the Shore is where Warren started to struggle. That game he didn’t see the ball that well, despite making 11 saves. The following game was York which was probably Warren’s worse game to date, which ultimately cost him his job for the next 3 games. He had a nice bounce back game against the Spartans in the CAC championship game, but never got back to the level of consistently good net minding I was hoping for. I am curious to see who he responds in the fall when every spot is up for grabs.

Ellis – Was a steady back up, but didn’t do enough to keep the job when Warren handed it to him. Kept the Gulls in the game vs York during the regular season, but returned to his backup role after the SVU game. With both keepers under the microscope this summer and fall and both being seniors, this could be an interesting battle.

As always, I am also optimistic the Gulls will benefit from a few transfers and and possibly a freshman who can contribute right off the bat. Those individuals are too be determined though.

Greetings Shore! Hope your vacation was great.

Since we are in the lacrosse ‘silly season’, I’ll lend a few thoughts as well.

Attack – Projected starting three (Melton, Ferrara, Moroney); Outside looking in (Armstrong, Brown, Ament)

Melton will be a preseason POY candidate for sure. Ferrara is as gritty as they come and even if he draws the opposition’s best defender, he will still stack numbers in 2020. The third spot is the wildcard. I’m hopeful that Moroney has/is rehabbing well and will be ready to roll come Fall. Moroney have a superior hunger for the goal as compared to Armstrong, which will lead to limited playing time for Armstrong assuming Moroney is 100%. If Moroney is <100% we could see a platoon. Moroney is more of a pure attacker, wants to score and isn’t shy about contact whereas Armstrong prefers space and is a contact avoider.

Midfield – Projected 1st Line (Wongus, Bromwell, Harbottle); Projected 2nd Line (Sanchez, Dembeck, [insert D1/JuCo transfer here]

At the start of 2019, most would have projected Wongus and Bromwell to be keystones here but after sub-par performances in 2019 the first line could have an ebb & flow feel early on. Hopefully these Cambridge boys are getting some summer coaching from Big Brom about planting their feet and driving shots through the goal. Harbottle is a strong kid with solid ballhandling skills and seems to have a nose for the goal and should round out the 1st line.

Sanchez had a solid freshman run and could easily run 2nd Mids with someone like Dembeck. You gotta think Coach Berkman has a transferor two coming in to beef up this midfield. A potential wildcard here could be Saulino. After spending freshman year as a SSDM, Saulino showed he could handle the ball well and is quick enough to run an extended offensive middie shift if needed.

LSM – Projected starter (Murphy); Platoon (Woodward, O’Callahan)

Murphy easily locks down this spot. Woodward had a breakout Soph season IMO and edges O’Callahan. Just a minor correction to Shore’s comments, O’Callahan did not play in ’18 after his freshman year in ’17. He bounced back well and was a caused turnover machine in ’19.

SSDM – Projected starters (Greik, Ford); Platoon (Saulino, [insert transfer here] or converted close defender)

Greik was outstanding in 2019 and will be an anchor with this group in 2020. Ford has a nice aggressive style but needs to control himself to stay out of the penalty box. I’d like to see his feet a little quicker too as he had a tendency to get beat early which resulted in a chase down situation and would lead to a push call or other infraction. Saulino is a solid platoon player here but as noted earlier, could see time on offense.

F/O – Projected starter (Malamphy); Platoon (Sweeney & Logue)

Hard to deny Malamphy from this spot regardless of Logue’s return. Sweeney had a solid year as Malamphy’s backup and I suspect that will remain the case in 2020 meaning Logue will drop to the third man in.

Defense – Projected starters (Apgar, Borkowicz, Kness); Outside looking in (Ballard, Ritsema)

Agree 100% with Borko being solid from his first start – kinda what you would expect from a MIAA product. Apgar had a great year in 2019 but not sure I agree with the 1st team AA honors especially with the way Krug dominated him in the semis. Kness (another MIAA grinder) was great until his ankle injury. Hopeful, like Moroney, he is rehabbing well and will be ready come January (no sense in pushing him in the Fall IMO.

The duo of the Twin Towers of Ballard (6’7”) and Ristema (6’5”) will see more playing time as long as they pack on some muscle this summer. Ballard likely has the inside track as first in when the substitutions start.

Goalie – Projected starter (Warren); Platoon (Ellis, Emmi, [insert freshman here])

Warren can have moments of brilliance as evidenced in the CAC Chmpshp and many other games. He ended the season ranked #9 in the nation in GAA with 7.81 just behind York’s Michael. This stat would likely have been lower had he not been pulled for Ellis. As for his clearing game, I still think this is solid part of Warren’s game and the miscues are more a byproduct of a flawed clearing strategy by the coaching staff. York’s Childs was the first to exploit the ‘standard Gulls clear’. Granted, Warren still needs to make a better decision then forcing the ball into a tight spot similar to the regular season YCP game. I would have rather seen him take the ball over or at a minimum dump it deep into the YCP defensive zone. At the end of the day, the coaches have to be more creative on the clear than simply run toward the box, draw the ride and rainbow a pass to a middie coming out of the box.

Ellis was serviceable in 2019 but not a game changer and not as athletic as Warren. To Shore’s point, he did well to keep the Gulls in contention vs YCP in the regular season game but was average against SVU and SMCM before a terrible game vs SVU in CAC 1st Rd.

Emmi should see more work in 2020 but if he comes in ready to go in the Fall he could be the #2 guy and likely gain the starting role in 2021.

Lacrosse Magazine had the Gulls as a way-early preseason #2 behind Williams for the 2020 season and somehow that feels about right.

Couple of unreal and incredibly thorough breakdowns, thank you! My last question would be, would it surprise or shock either of you to see an upper-class GK and close defender transfer in from D1 to push the incumbents?

Highly unlikely IMO. Berkman would likely be looking forward to a GK of the future so a Soph xfer would make more sense than a upperclassman who might only deliver one year.

The only possibility on D is if Kness isn’t 100%. Berkman loves Kness and with Apgar getting 1st team AA love he’s safe. Borkowicz is steady enough as not likely to be ousted as a starter.

Xfer needs are at midfield.

In terms of Coach going out and trying to nab these guys, eh maybe not. However, I would imagine there might be a few solid JUCO or D1 guys out there who haven't had the experiences that they are looking for and are considering Salisbury. Here are a few examples of those type of players in recent years;

Adam Huber (A/M): Transferred in for 1 season after being at Canisius. Joined a Gulls team that returned 3 starting attackman (Kalama, Garbarino, & Blondino). Ultimately ended up playing midfield and manup and tallying 37 points.

Duncan Campbell (F/O): 2 years at Monmouth came in and provided a nice 1-2 punch with Logue.

Gavin Demback (A/M): 1 year at Jax as an attackman, starting 5 games. Came to Salisbury and is now playing midfield.

Riley Ford (SSDM): 2 years at OCC (Juco), joined a somewhat crowded Dmiddie group with Greik and Stevens, but earned considerable playing time

TJ Ellis (goalie): transferred in as a Junior from Howard CC, came into a situation with another junior and senior already on the roster, but earned a spot.

As I mentioned, I'm not sure that Coach is actively looking for someone to replace Warren or Ellis, but if there is a goalie who is looking to win a ring and thinks Salisbury is a good fit, he'll have more than enough opportunities to showcase his abilities come fall ball try outs and I think Coach will welcome him with open arms.

Great write ups, Gents. Thank you. Agree with everything you write -- with a few tweaks.

Middies:
O midfield should definitely include Saulino and maybe Armstrong. Melton is the Offense QB. He either plays middie or he rotates to run the offense. If Wongus works on his left hand and plays in a men’s league this summer, he’ll have a breakout season. Snyder 2019 got close. Saulino; good lacrosse IQ, lean, mean and hungry. I see a young Sam Bradman. Sanchez, Dembeck et al: Gulls need a leader at middie.

Attack:
Maroney and Ferrara are the leads. Bromwell belongs at attack. Big, strong, quick hands, rocket shot. He can’t dodge but he won’t have to; just keep moving to get open and rip one in. If he can’t, several behind him can.

Face Off:
Three top tier fogos capable of scoring goals off the X. Sweeney should alternate at middie to give him confidence for a run to goal and for one on ones against an opposing fogo caught on the field.

Griek could be a formidable offensive middie but better as a clearing machine, transition SSDM.

Coaches need more clearing plays i.e. goalie running forward while attack or middie dodging and yelling “Give me the ball.” Last chance, Hail Mary lob or a ground ball deep toward Ferrara for a scrum. Hurt Gulls 2018 NC and again several times 2019.

Ford was born a decade too late. Ten years ago when ESPN featured “Hit of the Week” Ford’s victims would have filled a hospital ward. Today he needs to lower his T. (Try ordering meatloaf in the school cafeteria.)

Defense:
Apgar, the Twin Towers, Kness, Bork, Murphy… This group could start for the Terps or Jays. The worst you can say about any of them is Bork is steady and reliable; always does his job. Coaches need to implement a 3x3 zone to keep opponents off guard when needed. Most D I teams use one now and several opponents have used one effectively against the Gulls. Do it and Gulls will have >1 shutouts 2020.

Goalie:
What happened to Warren before/during WOTS 2019?
Keep personal/family issues private but any other insight would be appreciated.
How did this happen with Eric Miller involved? Did the Sho’men put a curse on him?

Schedule:
Against Krug in the semi Apgar was sluggish. 2020 consider dropping a game or two so Gulls have one/week going into playoffs. WOTS then YCP three days later was crazy. Axel, drop Geneseo and Montclair State. Shoot for NC being the 23rd game.

I agree with some of what you're say with some key exceptions-

I don't think you ment it as a back-handed compliment, but Bork is more than just some steady player. Maybe he isn't loading up the highlight real, but he plays strong, patient & positional defense. We don't necessarily hear a lot about him for one simple reason, he's doing his job. He's a very good close D-man and a leader on this team - Time to give this kid his due !

I think it would be a huge mistake to pull Melton off the attack. Melton's a special player and you lose too much in the assist & transition game not having him out there. As Shore mentioned earlier, Melton has the ability to make everyone around him better. Melton and Ferrara should remain on the attack unit - They compliment each other well and the results from '19 are hard to deny. I'm torn between Armstrong and Moroney as the third attackman. The Gulls need players on the field who move the ball well which has me leaning toward giving Pierre the nod. With the loss of the 1st line midis, what this team needs is the chemistry and stability that will come with leaving the attack unit intact. Love Brom and I believe a good portion of his struggles this season were due to his early season illness, but I just don't see the upside to having him play attack. Not to mention, Brom started to really contribute later in the season as a midfielder. Just my two cents...

I do like the idea of Saulino playing o-mid - Great athlete and appeared to have a good stick. I think Harbottle will play before Sanchez and Dembeck just may be a difference maker. Time will tell, but I expect the Gulls to be in the hunt again in 2020!

Unusually quiet from Salisbury.

Any notable freshmen or transfers?

Anybody return at a new level?

Have the Twin Towers joined the NBA yet?

What’s the goalie situation?

What’s the offensive middie lineup?

Has the team had its intra-squad scrimmage ending fall ball yet?

Unusually quiet from Salisbury.
- Yes, Berkman doesn’t do a lot of off-season chirping, and discourages those associated with the program from doing so. Nonetheless, I appreciate your seeking some information concerning the prospects for the upcoming season!

Any notable freshmen or transfers?
- Word out of Salisbury suggests nothing particularly notable on the freshman front; however there are two transfers who may have an impact and see some significant time. A middie transfer from Jacksonville and a goalie from Marquette.

Anybody return at a new level?
- Early reports suggest that Cross Ferrara is poised to have a monster season. Perhaps more importantly, Griffin Moroney (who going into the beginning of last season was a preseason All-American and expected to be the dominant force on the Seagull offense before tearing his ACL in January) has apparently made a full recovery and although is being held out of fall ball, is expected to pick up where he left off and if anything is hungrier after missing a season.

Have the Twin Towers joined the NBA yet?
- Fortunately, no! And instead they will be anchoring what is expected to be one of the most dominant defenses in Division III.

What’s the goalie situation?
- Reports after about half of the fall season is that the goalie situation is a dead heat between Warren, Ellis and the above mentioned transfer.

What’s the offensive middie lineup?
- Wongus and Bromwell, along with either Melton/Armstrong, depending on which of those two gets bumped off the attack line. (attack will definitely include Moroney and Ferrara, and either Melton or Armstrong with the 4th guy dropping to the first middie line).
2nd middie line looking like Harbottle, Dembeck and possibly the Jacksonville transfer.

Has the team had its intra-squad scrimmage ending fall ball
- No, It is scheduled for October 25th.

Hope this is helpful. Please don’t get agitated if some of this is incorrect; just based upon the scuttlebutt emanating from the Peninsula.

I believe Saulino is staying at D-Mid - Both Brad Greik and Riley Ford are Seniors this season and they need make sure they have some quality replacements

Freshman & Transfers -
I've heard there's a freshman attack name "Van" who looks like he'll be a really good play in future years - The goalie from Marquette isn't on campus yet but is expected next semester.

Returning players stepping up?
I've heard the the starting unit is really playing very well and have built upon the chemistry that was developed last season. If Cross Ferrara continues to improve at his assist-game, he'll have a good chance to to hit the 100-point mark. Hard to expect too much more out of Melton - likely to be in the POY conversation after posting 118 points and shooting close to 48 % in ' 19 if he hits 83 points he'll move into 3rd place all time for points at Salisbury. Based on average point Armstrong would have posted 78 points last year which ain't too shabby. He's a great feeder and takes care of the ball - I'm not sure the the makeup of the attack line is as cut and dry as what I've read in recent posts - Probably good problem to have.

I'm glad to hear from Dr. Pretorius that Moroney's recovered from knee surgery - It'll be interesting to see how this unit will shake out - I really don't see him bumping either Melton or Ferrara from the attack line. If anything I think Ferrara or Melton will start on attack and possible shift up to play midfield based on the situation, but I just don't see Berkman wanting either of them coming off the field.

Do not overlook the the Defense- They're going to be tough top to bottom- Assuming Kness is healed up and healthy, I'm not sure he's not the best man-on defender- Murphy moving back to his natural LSM position will not be easy for opposing midfielders - Murphy's a vacuum on the gb's and can lock down the best out there. Apgar pulled in 1st Team AA's honors and really works at his game (if you've ever seen him, probably don't need to say much more)- Drew Borkowicz is a stud - Never gets the credit he deserves - in '19 Bork had two more gb's and the same number of CT's that Apgar posted- I love Brad Greik's game as a shortie- just great man-on D and proved he can shoot the rock posting 7 goals and 2 assists while posting a shooting percentage of "87.5" - Riley Ford really started to cut out the penalties and is a really solid short stick midi - With Ford's exceptional athletic ability I wouldn't be surprised if he has a big year.

Goalie Situation?
I'm pulling for Warren - but who knows

Midfield lineup?
Probably Wongus, Bromwell (both will need to step up their games this season), and likely, in some form, one of the four attack-man mentioned above - That being said, I really like Dembeck - I think he was playing it conservatively last season trying avoid mistakes and get some playing time. I saw plenty of moments in game where you could tell he's a player - some consistent time on the field to build chemistry and I wouldn't be surprised if he push's both Wongus and Bromwell. I see Harbottle on the 2nd line but after that, we'll have to see

I was able to make it to the game. I wasn't sure I was going to risk the drive with the bridge repair and delays, but that wasn't a problem and the weather was great.
It turned out to be a long game/scrimmage, but fun to watch. As mentioned in this thread the Attack line is playing very well, as well as the D. No change from last season. I was really impressed with SS defensive mids, very fast and aggressive. The face-off X is going to be very good, and if Malamphy's in 2020 :o . There were new players and new numbers, so I'm not completely sure who was who, but the middie lines appeared to be (1st: 6,29, 42 2nd: 15, 30, 39). These lines looked to be very good, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some movement between these lines. The three middies that stood out were 15, 39, 42.
The stick work and skill throughout the team was very good, and some of the freshmen looked primed and hungry.

The 2020 Gull Schedule from 2/29/20 to 3/27/20 looks a bit stiff with USCG, Stevens, OWU, Rhodes, Cortland, Geneseo, Stevenson and Cabrini.

Did Axel book these games while Berkman was on vacation to boost his chances at succession?

Considering the problems at goalie and O middie; Is a Murderer’s Row like this wise?

Any news or updates on the team?

HELLO...?
1. With softness in conference, Gulls would be unwise to schedule a soft OOC sked.
2. Pretty decent run of opponents but Murderer's Row? ??
3 I think if you asked the coaches, the tough part of their OOC schedule for 2020 might include @ Gettysburg,,,and vs Hornets.

What problems at goalie and O middie? Did we graduate anyone at goalie? No graduating goalies or defensemen on a team that was 22-2, OH THAT PROBLEM? O middie? Ok, a few guys graduated, but probably nobody in the pipeline? Would you like to buy my bridge?

Murderer’s Row? Really? Steel sharpens steel! Looks like a great warmup, and test for Saturday/ Sunday playoff games. Hey Gulls tighten the laces and strap the chinstraps up you have a bullseye on your backs......again!

Updates? Champions wear gold.
