Anybody else hear about an incoming midfielder from Furman? Rumor has it they landed one in this 2024 class.

I noticed on the D I threads a discussion about proposed rule changes for Face Offs. Salisbury has an excellent FX volunteer coach.

Could somebody please explain the proposed changes and how in particular they might affect Malamphy, Sweeney, Thompson and Logue (if he returns);
i.e. moto grip, knee on ground, clamp, pinch, punch, pop etc.

From what I’ve read, the moto grip (as in hands grabbing the stick like one would grab the handle bars when riding a motorcycle) and having a knee down on the ground are not allowed any longer.

Meaning you will have to hold your stick in the neutral grip manner as you would when cradling. And no knee down seems self explanatory.

It sounds like the intended purpose is to remove that “duel or hold” debacle/debate about whether a clamp on the ball without raking it out, circling and battling is either a whistle or “play on.”

I don’t know how any of these players take a draw grip wise so I don’t know how that will help or hurt them. I’m sure this is an over simplification, however, I’ve heard the changes will make the draw be more about reaction time speeds than about physical strength and stamina.

One of the often mentioned positives (or gripes depending on who is saying it) about Malamphy is that his physical maturity is what gives him the strength that makes him such a force at the X.

To that I say- obviously he has the reaction time, strength alone won’t give you his numbers. And the staff at Salisbury has to be among the best in the business. So IF the changes present any need to alter the tactics, rest assured they will make the adjustments and continue their success. Always have.

Looks like the Gulls picked up a 4 star 2020 de commit from Furman according to Inside Lacrosse.

I say this as a Shoreman fan, the only way you can truly affect Malamphy is to eliminate the face off. That young man has it all: strength, speed, and smarts. DeepPocket hit the nail on the head. Emphasize speed/quickness and deemphasizing strength...more fast breaks...more goals...faster game, etc. I’m not that crazy about it. It does help smaller/quicker guys and it incrementally deemphasizes FOGO specialists..but I enjoy a good duel, I like watching the adjustments, I like watching a face off guy so good you have to put a pole out there to slow him down. If I’m right about Malamphy it’ll just change the tools he uses, and the upshot is that given equal reaction times, his strength and speed will give him more takeaways. Maybe traditional FO win percentage takes a small hit but his TakeAways will offset and them some. I’ll crawl back in my hole now...

Thanks WASHFAN and Deep; If Malamphy emphasizes fast breaks including taking more shots in 2021, the returning Gull attackmen will set new records. Not sure about the official stats but it seemed the 2016/17 teams played a more run n gun style than this team.

Watching Malamphy play is a treat for fans. He’ll have an off day occasionally but his love of playing the game just radiates. When he grabs one, sprints downfield with the pack on his heals then slams the pellet in for a goal - the fans roar.

Berkman, Block et al picked him for the Gull All Decade Team. I don’t disagree but b/c he’s missing a ring, I’d footnote Tyler Granelli who has two; 2011 against Tufts and 2012 against his former club, SUNY Cortland. At the post game coaches press conference the Cortland coach was asked if he regretted cutting Granelli; thought about it awhile then, No.

The 2020 NC Game thread ultimately deferred to the 2016 Salisbury/Tufts NC game in which TJ Logue faced off against Conor Helfrich. My prediction for the 2020 NC game had Salisbury/Tufts again where Logue/Malamphy would have faced Kyle Helfrich. In 2016 NC Conor Helfrich went 20/27 including 5/0 in Q 4 when the Jumbos mounted their furious comeback. Helfrich and Malamphy are back; not sure about Logue.

I'm not sure either - Berkman isn't a fast-break kind of guy. He likes his teams to know how to play w/ a lead & wearing down the D looking for the best shot. That being said, both of these teams ('17 & '20) typically put a hurtin' on opponents when in unsettle situations. Both could create beautiful fast-breaks. Without having any idea about the stats, I'd give '17 team the nod- Ternahan was a special LSM in all facets of the game, but could push the break with the best of them. I heard that he was an accomplished attackman at some point prior to his college years.

When I was looking back at that '17 team's roster, Wow!! They were loaded and would have been undefeated if not for a questionable 3 minute penalty in the 4th quarter against Cabrini. Check out this group that the Gulls had rolling game after game in 2017

Attack:
Nate Blondino (2017 POY 2X AA including 1st Team honors)

Carson Kalama (2X HM Team AA - 200 Goals scored with 52.8% Shooting percentage - One of the great finishers)

Nick Garbarino (I believe he was an HM AA- Another phenomenal finishers - In '17 Garbarino finished with the same point total (88 points) as Kalama w/ 4 less games played)

Notable Off the Bench :
Josh Melton (Started 1st four games in '17 until Garbarino's return and then being moved to the 1st line midfield)

Griffin Maroney (Future Preseason AA after 47 goals - Injury sidelined Maroney in '19 & frankly played well enough to earn honors in the first 7 games in '20)

Midfielders:
1st Line:
Brendan Bromwell (1st Team AA - big, strong & fast 2-way midi - Great leader)

Corey Gwin (Future Midfielder of the Year 2X AA including 1st Team honors - Strong, agile with a cannon of a shot)

Josh Melton (Future 2X AA including 1st Team honors as an attackman - Great finisher & one of the best feeders in SU history)

2nd Line:
Garrett Reynolds (HM AA - Perhaps the best athlete on the team w/ cannon from outside - & great energy guy and teammate)

Adam Huber (100 + MPH shot roaming around at the point on the EMO)

Kevin McDermott (Strong a steady player - Good vision and could back d-mid's to get a shot - registered 3-4 points in the '17 National Championship)

Notable Off the Bench :
Zach Pompea (Can this be correct ?? - Future 1st Team AA)

Tyler Snyder (68 Points - 43G & 25A during the '19 season - How this kid got no AA honors is a mystery to me)

Defense: (Among if not the best D units in SU History)
Kyle Tucker (2017-'18 1st Team AA - 2x DPOY- Went on to play Pro)

Will Nowesnick (2017-'18 1st Team AA - Went on to play Pro)

Aaron Leeds (HM AA - For anyone who saw Aaron play, you know his lack of additional honors were only because of the two young men listed above & the voters not being willing to include the entire Gull unit)

Notable Off the Bench :
Drew Borkowicz (Future HM AA- 3 Year starter - and pivotal contributor in '17 including starting in the Semis against Dennison)

LSM:
Andrew Ternahan (1st Team AA - Great player all-around player - Remember when he almost scored b-t-b off the lob pass to himself !?!?)

Cory Berry (HM AA - Probably possessed the best take-away-checking -ability on the team - Another example of a player who would have had additional honors if there weren't so many AA's on this team)

Notable Off the Bench:
Kevin Murphy (2X AA including 2nd Team honors)

Shorties:
Troy Miller (2X AA including 2nd Team honors- Strong sturdy & quick - Good stick - Entered SU as an attackman)

Jeremiah LaClair (One man clearing machine & very good defensive player worthy of AA honors)
Notable Off the Bench :

Notable Off the Bench :
Brad Greik (Future 2nd Team AA & fan favorite- Great defensive player w/ the ability to score in the transition. One man clearing machine and recent USILA Scholar AA)

FOGO: Only unit w/out AA honors, but bott very good in their own right & when you have Ternahan & Berry on the wings...
Duncan Campbell (Strong and tough FOGO who could win the fo and score off the break)

TJ Logue (Again a strong and physical FOGO so could win himself or tie up opponents while the wingers came in to scoop up gb's)

Goalie:
Colin Reymann (HM AA- Steady GK who made the saves he should and fair amount he probably shouldn't have - Colin would have had additional honor, but didn't face enough shots due to the juggernaut of a defense he had in front of him)

Notable Off the Bench :
Brandon Warren (Future HM AA)

Just a little reminiscing during these strange times... A phenomenal team that should ranked among the best-

I for one really hope we get to see this upcoming group play in 2021 !!
