The facts do not support the conclusion that offense employed last year (which will be the same this year with Coach B moving up from Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach) was simply plodding along. Let's take a look at the data from HC lax stats archives: https://www.goholycross.com/ViewArticle ... =210231219.

Focusing on the offensive stats, and comparing the 2018 group to the teams from 15-17, the group was much less experienced and the on the field stats showed a drop in performance from the prior years with the same staff and offensive scheme. Keep in mind that the 17 and 16 teams played 15 games with the 17 team arguably the most successful in school history by advancing to the PL semi-finals. Opponent stats are presented in ().

2018 (JL) 2017 (JL) 2016 (JL) 2015 (JL) 2014 (JM)
Shot Attempts 472 (414) 492(514) 536 (511) 393 (481) 539 (626)
Goals 87 (143) 128 (162) 134 (173) 120 (154) 136 (202)
GPG 6.69 (11) 8.53 (10.8) 8.93 (11.53) 9.23 (11.85) 9.07 (13.47)
SOG % 47.7 (60.6) 57.1 (57.2) 54.3 (61.8) 59.0 (57.6) 52.5 (58.0)
TO 216 (203) 216 (243) 185 (241) 178 (151) 227 (201)
Shots/Game 36.3 (34.8) 32.8 (34.3) 35.7 (34.1) 30.2 (37) 35.9 (41.7)
Assists 44 (95) 71 (121) 62(129) 63 (108) 76 (124)

The categories that jump out are the SOG % (47.7), TOs (216) and assists (44). That is not scheme, but I suspect, experience. The 2017 was a group of Seniors that had played together for a few seasons. The results showed.

The 2018 group only had 1 senior and 1 junior that received regular minutes. ironically, that group had more shot attempts but substantially lower SOG % than their opponents. They had more TOs and their opponents shared the ball much better with more than double the assists.

Comparing the 2015 to the 2018 groups, same # of games, the 18 group had more shot attempts but were much less accurate (Goals, SOG% and GPG), more careless (TOs) and again did not share as well (Assists). With a year of experience and returning most of the offensive players, the above stats should increase without a change in the offensive scheme. Looking forward to seeing the boys play.

Go Saders.

Well Sillylax, we just need to wait and see. The stats are there to reflect the whole season but things changed the last 5 games which is a positive. The Navy game was close but yes not to many players had the confidence to shoot. Only one or two players shot the ball last year in bigger numbers. Confidence comes from practice shooting at practice and drills which was absent most of that season. TO were a problem, To me the team lacked assists which shows no scheme. I would rather leave the past behind and build on the positives from the last 5 games. Including OC 16th ranked rating on Face offs and Farrell’s school record on GB’s. Some good freshman have come in and a Much needed change in attack was made. Additions and experience at defense should help tremendously.
Fall ball, even with the weather, was fun to watch and to see assists on more than half the goals and see 8+ goals put up in the first half. Rain was coming down sideways and the confidence was there on passing, assisting and shooting.

Still looking forward to a tough schedule and some success.

Agree, time will tell but having seen fall ball scrimmage, it is clear the ball is moving different. Whether its similar scheme with players moved around to better fit their skill set I am not sure. Either way, it looks different and better ball movement. I expect way more assists this year.

The handle is Sllaxdad. I assume we are all adults on this site and can accept the opinions of another, even those which we disagree, Based upon the name calling, I was wrong. The simple point was to note that most of the boys have an additional year of playing experience which should help the on the field performance. My view of the stats from prior years is that playing experience has a bigger impact than offensive scheme. Cheers.

Maybe that auto correct kicked in ? Anyway having seen this team play for both coaches I can tell you there is a major difference. Stats only tell part of the story. That story being history; and regards to PB being the OC there was one voice on the sidelines and it was not his. Any good coach will tell you a team has to pass the eye test ; and seeing that October scrimmage in a monsoon this is a much different offense. When they have numbers they push the ball ; I am very excited to see how they fair against a very tough schedule.

Super apologetic for the Sillylax comment, was not meant to hurt your feelings. I have to get my PCness up to date. I appreciate your posting and insights even if I might not agree fully with your comments.

Having proper manors and acting as an adult is not PC nor a typo. Apology accepted. Have an enjoyable New Year.

Lets change focus to this years team please! New regime, host of new players, new team attitude. Plenty of promise based on fall ball. Breathe of fresh air after last years on the field and off the field issues. Go 2019 SADERS! salut1

66, scrimmage is against Quinnipiac not Rutgers was announced today. I know there was a conflict and Rutgers already had Nova on their schedule.

I guess most of the team is on the hill getting ready for preseason today. They were seen in the Luth Center practicing for 3 hours.

Quinnipiac scrimmage moved to 1pm today instead of Sunday because of impending storm. If someone goes, please update how we looked

HC put up 13 goals in 3 qrts against Bryant. Highlights, Baker 3 goals, Spangenberg 3 goals, Mullaney 2 goals, Waldron 2 Babiak 2 and I dont have the rest. Kodzis was not playing. This was on 35 Shots on goal. Defense was solid, Farrell had two nice helicopter strips. New and Conlin are looking great as well as Murphy. Much improved defense from last week. Hannan and Mckenna once again were turning the middies to wherever they wanted them to go.
O'Connell was 8-10 on faceoffs and Keating was about 50%. Through Three quarters, Burke had lots of freshman filing in. Had some of the obvious 1's on defense sit out after half time. Tesoro looked great, some of the other goalies need some work.

Overall i had us ahead until the end of 3. Then both teams got a look at the other players. I might have missed a thing or two, but the good news is we look pretty solid right now. Nice to see that we are scoring at a much better clip and are taking advantage of our FOGO wins.

Yes, team looked good. Very positive sign over a preseason ranked Bryant team.

Team looked very aggressive all over the field ; lots of backside doubles and Dmids were very tough up top . I heard shots were around 30 as well; offense really spread it around well . At home this weekend at Father K field . Doubleheader with SHU and Dartmouth. Should be a great test SHU has an attackman on the Tewarton watch list and Dartmouth beat us in last years scrimmage. Let’s go Crusaders

Will be nice to finish out spring scrimmages strong. Would expect a lot of players getting in this weekend for experience.
