Brown 2021

Post by bearlaxfan »

Eh, why not.

So, starters graduating (I guess~ fluid situation currently): AA goalie, 1 close D, 1 ssdm, 1 fo, and 2 starting attack. I know C. Fiore got time in goal, but in this very abbreviated season I was not able to i.d. any heirs apparent at attack; maybe man up specialist J. Parr. D, lsm, ssdm and fo seem set.

We love Will Gural in our house. He had an incredible season and well-deserved AA recognition that year. I have watched his OT faceoff 15 times and still don’t fully understand what he did after a clean win forward to himself. Instead of scooping and going to the hoop the way he’d done all season, he seemed to dive and goose the ball forward. He was a FO genius and a converted field player who understood flow and space. I’m sure he had a reason and I’ve always wanted to ask him that question.

nice pick-up by Brown over the weekend in gaining a commitment from Bullis' Spencer Hughes to the CLass of 2021....the 4 star, versatile, excellent-shooting and dynamic middie had a break-out fall and started the spring with solid efforts...wants the ball in crunch time like his idol Kobe Bryant.....will join teammate middie Anzelone in Sept. of '21 in Providence.....Bullis Coach Bellistri whose son Kylor excelled at Brown and now in the pros continues to send his best Brown's way and it is appreciated....high level of high school lacrosse at Bullis places his kids ready to go at Brown....not being able to assess high school juniors on the field this spring presents some issues, but Brown has lined-up an excellent '21 class that, arguably, may even be better than the solid group coming in 5 months......Hughes appears to be a real spark plug with enough swagger to make sure he contributes early and often at Brown.......

I'd love to see Goss, McCaleb, Kniffen get another year somewhere, either as senior transfers or postgrads. Would expect them to graduate and postgrad rather than withdraw with only 1/2 semester left. McCaleb's military commitment will be an issue I assume.

This is truly a sneaky good commit for Brown. If you watched Bullis this all too short season, he was arguably the best player on the field for the Bulldogs. And he's also a social media superstar, per ESPN:

We re-watched the entire 2016 semi-final game on ESPNU last night, bracing for some PTSD moments but mostly enjoying a rocking display of lacrosse with no conventional strategy. That was a very special team and I don't think we will ever see that style of fully off-leash play again any time soon. A couple of things stood out for us:
  • Tulett and Kemp were absolute beasts. They dominated face-off clean-up and transition. The ability to have them stay on the field in the offensive end was genius. Yes, they had amazing sticks, but more importantly they didn't allow MD to run a normal defensive set. They couldn't get the right personnel on the field and were stuck with O middies playing defense. Screwed up slide packages, etc. Kinda makes you wonder why more coaches don't convert tough middies with good sticks to LSM.
Kelly got burned twice being out of the net and once on the 10-man ride. OTOH he had a key strip and drew a penalty from Rambo with an aggressive play. Overall it seemed to work for him. As he said during an interview shown during the broadcast, the aggressive play wasn't just run and gun on offense. The mindset carried over to D as well. The whole package really seemed to work for his remarkable mental toughness.
Bailey Tills had one of the coolest goals of the season in the first quarter: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/pgnw ... anded-goal
Gural was a genius. Yeah he could outclamp anyone in the country that year, but his field sense and loose ball leverage were even more impressive. Kid was a gamer.

Loved the way Quint buried the Bears as soon as it was 2-0 Md. Did he not watch any film? He really has a thing abt the Ivies. Tillman did a great job with Heacock effing up Kelly's outlet passes. Of course Lars responded by... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Should have called a t.o. as time ran down, game tied in the 4th as Tills ran into trouble from x. Pretty sure they still had one left. Ancient history now...

I'm not an ESPN hater, but I totally agree on QK's Balto bias in Q1. He also misunderstood what Kelly was doing on the 10 man ride. The play for the goalie is to sprint to the endline not to the crease when someone takes a shot from 70 yards away. That had worked all year. The temptation is just too great to take a shot at the goal, but about 80% of the time the ball goes harmlessly out of bounds for an easy turnover. Good point on Heacock and the outlet passes. He was wide open on the doorstep for about 5 full seconds before finally getting the ball in OT to end it. Kid's a scrapper.

Would love to see Brown follow the Yale/TD precedent and figure out a way to return some current seniors for next spring. If a few guys re-up, the squad probably won't be able to keep up with Yale, but I like their chances against Princeton w/o Sowers and Cornell w/o Teat & Milliman. With the big state universities getting stacked with 5th years, I fear that the Ivies may go from dominant to distant pursuers. Hope I'm wrong.
