U-19 tryouts

Post by Cooter »

The U-19 tryouts have begun:
https://teamusa.uslacrosse.org/us-under ... s-u19-team
• Players have to be under 19 as of Aug. 31, 2019 (the year before the championship) to be eligible per World Lacrosse regulations.
It seems surprising there aren't more college freshmen.

Looking at the current list of U-19 invitees, listed above, they seem to have added Joseph Marshall, G, Calvert Hall 2020 to the list.

Marshall's Calvert Hall team-mate, Cole Herbert was named Co-Sun player of the year and Markland award winner, so he looks pretty good for making the first cut.

Another new player on the tryout list is Jack Fabean, D, Manasquan, Richmond

Marshall might have replaced Colin Krieg, who has left the original list. As has Nathan Laliberte FO Governors Academy 2020 Bryant. As has Angelo Petrakis FO Massapequa (N.Y.) 2019 Cornell
I thoughet Petrakis would probably be the choice at face-off.

To be fair, most on-age college freshman are too old to play U-19.

Xanders tweets from the scrimmages

Wrapped up the first scrimmage at the @USAMLax U-19 tryouts. Most impressed with the scoring ability of Pat Kavanagh (@NDlacrosse), face-off dominance of Conor Calderone (@TerpsMLax) and gritty D from Sutton Boland (@PennStateMLAX)... all New York natives.

Less eventful second scrimmage (a blowout) at the @USAMLax U-19 tryouts. Jake Naso was huge on FO’s, adding at least 2G’s. Also impressed with five-star attackmen Brennan O’Neill, Eric Malever & Jake Taylor, with two-way middie Alex Wicks acting as a catalyst in transition.

I recall being 18 the summer before I entered my freshmen year of college.

Me too. I would have made age cutoff in the bizzaro world where I would have been considered for this team but by about a month. Most of my teammates were a few months younger, a few a few months older. But that was then! A lot of guys are now pushing this limit, many many prep players. It is what it is and what it is is not a competitive advantage because one team’s players are 4-6 months older than the others.

I'm confused -- when you guys say college freshmen, are you talking about 2018's or 2019's?

I recollect that there is one 2018 who tried out, a goalie, and the rest are 2019s and 2020s. So mainly rising college freshmen and rising HS seniors.

I am thinking about 2018's.
I guess I wouldn't have made it, because I would be 19 before August 31 after my freshman year of college.
In my day, they started public grade school years by age (Jan 1), whereas I believe nowadays a lot of public schools have the cut off at like August 31, so perhaps there really shouldn't be too many college freshmen (2018's).

Interesting that both Terry Foy and Ty Xanders reported that 5 star Maryland recruit Eric Malever made their short list of those who impressed the most and he didn't make the top 50 cut.

The only possible way any Service Academy player can make it is if they are a rising senior in HS, otherwise they will have school commitments. I recall Ryan Kern (goalie Navy) made the U-19 team then had to withdraw due to Plebe Summer.

Congrats to all.
A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.

Yes. That was Kern's circumstance. I had forgotten that.
