So, the schedule said a home game tomorrow against Penn, with tomorrow's weather forecast calling for rain in CT. In 2016 Yale was undefeated and ranked #1 coming into its home game against Penn. There was torrential rain in the morning, although it let up at game time. Penn played like their lives depended on it, jumping out to a lead they maintained pretty much throughout. It was 7-4 Penn at halftime, and when the Quakers scored the first two goals of the second half, I thought for sure that the Elis were about to suffer a defeat; but what a ferocious rally! Ty Warner scored off a Reeves assist, and the 3rd quarter ended with Penn up 9-6. We brought it all the back to 9-9 with a Cimbalista goal, only for Penn to regain the lead 10-9. Penn had the ball and the lead with about a minute left and called time-out. Yale forced a turnover (Reilly Naton, I believe), and with a man-up Reeves passed to Keasey who wound up and shot from distance to tie the score with 17 seconds remaining. Yale took its first lead of the day in overtime when Reeves circled around from behind the goal and ended it, 11-10 and an amazing game.

Not much to do with all of the downtime … the rivalry between Yale and Penn is nothing short of remarkable. In the last 17 games the two teams have played against each other, 12 of those games have been one goal games - 3 have been two goal games - and only 2 have been decided by more than two goals. That is just ASTONISHING! The good news for Yale is that the Elis have won 11 of those last 15 games, including in the NCAA playoffs last year. I still think that the Ivies got screwed last year by having those two teams play each other to get into the Final Four. They both should've been there.

What a rivalry!

Very true, Lax3... the 2017 ILT included a 4-overtime Yale win over Penn.

Sowers just left Princeton so that he can preserve a fifth year, not waiting to find out how the Ivies are going to handle the fifth year. So basically he did what Pannell did with his injury as well as a few Yale players along the way including (I believe) Luke Aronson in 2010. Wonder if any Yale players will do the same?

Imagine it will be a well considered option for a few high profile Elis as well as other Ivy stars if league sanctioned. The high profile Sowers established this spring will likely prod the league to make their decision sooner than they would have otherwise.

This lack of decision making by the Ivy League is irresponsible. They need to get on a conference bridge and give their student athletes an extra year. Gosh darn it!

Reminder, mid-lax, that the Ivy League considers itself "above" athletic issues such as this one! God forbid that an issue that affects 100% of the participants in the sport around the country would force them to make a decision about the 2% that play the sport in their league! So .. completely agree with you!

You mean allow the player to graduate and participate as a graduate student?

Very good background story on Coach Shay and the team finding out the season was canceled. Of course, disagree on the 'just plain wrong' statement.

I am not sure that is going to happen. My gut says no but it would be nice.

This leaves only the withdraw option for seniors. Underclassmen may be able to leverage a fifth year somewhere else. A lot of Ivy League players will be re-recruited post graduation for the next few years.

Not just disappointing, but, upsetting as I indicated in the Ivy League thread. This is the gratitude the Elis get from the League for representing it well and even winning a national championship. I feel terrible for the seniors and for Coach Shay.

And with Sowers bailing out early in order to get another year, Princeton likely becomes the new favorite to win the Ivies in 2020. Sort of feels like Duke in 2006 when they got the extra year. Press loved it but other D1 players for other schools were not happy campers at the competitive advantage it gave Duke.

As far as I can tell (based on his Twitter post yesterday), Sowers is still enrolled at Princeton and evaluating his options.

And less than 30 minutes after my last post, I stand corrected! The Ivy League has NOT ruled on a fifth year and Sowers IS still enrolled at Princeton!!! My bad, folks!

I for one will be very happy to go to lacrosse games again, however the field may or may not tilt as a result of the current situation.

I don’t understand why the reference is always “graduate student” eligibility. It seems that’s a separate path.
