February Top 25ish Games

Post by LaxDad23 »

I was curious and put this together. The ranks are the average of the pre-season polls -- not anything more than that. I included mostly top 25 teams playing each other, but added a few others. It looks like Syracuse kicks off the season 2/7, but not all teams have posted their schedules.

On paper, the weekend of Feb 21-23 looks awesome in terms of matchups.

Dr Tact...thank you for starting this...agree the vast majority of your predictions, except a few. I would put VaTech over JMU, NW over ND (but close call), Navy over Duke (Duke will struggle everywhere except the draw), NW over Cuse (Cmon get off the fence...no toss ups!), UVA over Princeton (UVA wins on road...not sure why Princeton schedules UVA so early every year), Hopkins over GT, Cuse over MD (think Cuse will be fired up for this and MD vulnerable early).

I cant take credit as it is the LaxDad that did it.

OK, Ill get off the fence on Cuse/NW. I dont like this pick, but I'll take Cuse. Oh your Duke comment got me thinking...no C.North....I think you may be right....Navy it is..

Good news early on for some of these matchups--they will be webcast.

Northwestern at Duke. The 'Cats should cruise here but it's still a compelling matchup. This will be broadcast on the ACC Network at noon on Sunday, Feb 9th.

Then, an even more compelling matchup: Stony Brook at Syracuse. The Orange should win fairly easily but the Seawolves should put up a fight for a while. That is also broadcast on the ACC Network on Monday Feb 10th at 5pm.

It may be that Madizone--(JMU's own production crew) will broadcast their tilt vs UNC on the 8th. The Patriot League network may broadcast Navy's matchup with Virginia. We shall see. Anyway--good eats for the first week of the new season.

BIG weekend coming up as LaxDad pointed out way back when. UMD at UNC and SYR at NU top the charts, but there are some other beauts in here too.

These were my predictions on January 8:

21-Feb 5 BC 13 USC BC
22-Feb 15 JMU 21 High Point JMU
22-Feb 22 Johns Hopkins 11 Penn PENN
22-Feb 14 Loyola 16 Florida HOUNDS
22-Feb 3 Maryland 1 UNC UNC
22-Feb 2 Syracuse 4 Northwestern CUSE (GOTTA....)
22-Feb 7 Virginia 6 Princeton TIGERS
23-Feb 18 Colorado 8 Michigan NO IDEA; GO WITH MICHIGAN

I am going to

Stick with BC, although it is in LA and a crap shoot.

Stick with JMU

Stick with Penn

Stick with Loyola, although I see this as a close game now, favoring the kids with good winter tans....

Stick with UNC -- 6 to 8 goals.

Stick with Cuse, although plainly a toss-up. I'm a Syracuse grad, so I'm stuck.

Don't know about UVA and Princeton. If D'Orsi is not healthy or playing at all...well, I will stick with the Tigers at home.

Switch -- going with Colorado. I think Michigan's offense is a little anemic.

22-Feb 2 Syracuse 4 Northwestern CUSE (GOTTA....)

I am going to

Stick with Cuse, although plainly a toss-up. I'm a Syracuse grad, so I'm stuck.
It'll largely depend on how much SU can push NU's buttons. If they can, like Notre Dame did, then we'll probably see a ton of fouls and cards (NU had 5 yellow and 2 green in that one). If SU can take advantage of those, they have a chance. Problem is, there are so many "ifs" here. Have they learned the lessons of the Stony Brook loss? Not sure.

Draws will be a big deal. Can Hawryschuk/Widner handle Dwyer/McKone? NU has won the draw the last three times these two teams have played, though the NCAAT quarterfinal was the closest:

2018: Northwestern 18, Syracuse 10
2019 (regular season): Northwestern 20, Syracuse 11
2019 (NCAAT Quarters): Northwestern 17, Syracuse 16

However, turnovers have gone in favor of the Orange in those same three games, though it was close in the quarters (much like the draws):

2018: Northwestern 18, Syracuse 10
2019 (regular season): Northwestern 20, Syracuse 13
2019 (NCAAT Quarters): Northwestern 15, Syracuse 13

Wildcats have a prolific offense right now. Syracuse does too, but can they maintain it for 60 minutes? History tells us no (I really hope I'm wrong on this). Can the Orange take advantage of free positions? That's been a struggle this year. SU probably has an advantage defensively. Goldstock is clearly the goalie for Syracuse, but who will start for Northwestern, Krupnick or Doucette?

Syracuse has never won at Evanston, however, the field this year will be different. In years previous, the Orange played outside and they seem to have problems on natural grass. This year, it'll be in the Ryan Fieldhouse (it looked like a pretty nice facility when I watched the UND/NU game last Friday), and the turf actually resembles more of a Dome surface, which might help the Orange.

My take on 'Cuse-NU is that for all their problems, NU has an identity. They attack to score. They expect to win every draw. Even defense, which needs a LOT of work, is at least on the same page. And their main takeaway from the ND game was simply to take better care of the ball, which I expect them to implement immediately because they have the skill and experience to do so, and because they're still fuming about their ND game. Cuse on the other hand seemed to lack leadership on the field vs SBU, their attack looked out of sync, their defense looked out of sorts. Those are much bigger problems for them to have tried to contend with this week. The only way I see 'Cuse winning this game is if they manage to really frazzle NU on the ride. I think they could make the wheels fall off if they can do that, especially if it's a close game into the second half. But if they let NU stay in their comfort zone, I don't see the Orangewomen walking away with a W.

I just don’t see Cuse staying with NU. They are the same team outside of D, but NU is more lethal. If NU dominates Draw, they win big. If Cuse dominates draw this will be an interesting match. Not sure if NU D can consistently stop Gary’s weave offense with all of the picks and switching required. Cuse loses a little with Alexander going down. I think all considered, NU wins by 4 or 5 at home in front of a raucous crowd.
