ACC Tournament one week away, and all the others are right behind. Yes indeed!

Extremely interesting USLax magazine article, especially the part about how SB's strong week affected the tourney chances of some of its previous opponents. Team A's tourney chances may hinge more on a past opponent's next game than on Team A's next game, even if that opponent is in a different conference.

According to the RPI right now, the last four at large teams in the tournament would be:

#17 Penn
#19 Johns Hopkins
#20 Stanford
#23 Colorado

First four excluded:

#24 Georgetown
#26 Hofstra
#27 Richmond
#28 Duke

Isn't RPI just one of several factors that the selection committee uses rather than the only criterion? It seems every year we (I) get obsessed with RPI. And does anyone know the weight given to each factor?

Yes, there are other criteria, but RPI usually correlates well with what teams get in.

I'll take a crack at the seeding.

1) Boston College if they win the ACCT
2) Maryland if they win the B1GT
otherwise they could be flipped

3) North Carolina
4) Syracuse if Northwestern doesn't win the B1GT
5) Northwestern unless they win the B1GT, then they move ahead of Syracuse
6) Notre Dame
7) Virginia
8) Princeton, but could be Michigan if they can knock off Northwestern in the B1GT
USC could get in too...

Richmond is officially the first team in the 2019 NCAAT. They'll represent the Atlantic 10 AQ with a 19-18 OT win over UMass.
North Carolina is in as well! They represent the ACC with a 15-13 win over Boston College.
High Point gets the Big South AQ with a 17-10 win over Winthrop.
USC grabs the final AQ of the day in the Pac-12 with a 12-3 win over Colorado.

The rest of the automatic qualifiers will be decided next weekend.

Similar question. There's straight RPI (i.e. Your Opponent's W-L records, their opponent's W-L records) and then, which seems to be what the NCAA uses, an RPI hybrid which divides these opponents into Ranked Top 5 opponents, Ranked Top 10 opponents, etc. in order to see each teams record against each gradation of opponent. Is this an accurate assessment and which RPI is being used when the NCAA speaks to a team's RPI?

Nothing mind-blowing in this piece but keeps things a little organized and allows to make some guesses. D1 Women: Who Goes to the NCAA Championships.

Why is VT listed as a possible? Their record is 8-10, and they have no more games on the schedule. Is having a .500 record or better no longer a pre-requisite for the NCAA tourney?

You are correct, Badlands. That is an error. They are not eligible.

Maybe someone got thrown off by listening to Werme and Secundo discussing VT's chances for the tournament and their status as a bubble team immediately after Werme noted that they had fallen to 8-10.

They were bad. Not brutal, but wow were they misinformed so often. I muted them for the whole tournament. I couldn't take them.

Penn State is currently at 8-8, and scheduled to play Maryland on Thursday. They have to beat Maryland to remain above .500, or they will be ineligible for the NCAA tourney.

That’s a painful last game when there’s a .500 requirement! I guess that’s why some teams are scheduling OOC cupcake opponents.
