Preview of North Quarterfinal - Phins/Mavs

Post by RedFromMI »

#1 seed Le Moyne Dolphins (15-2) hosting #4 seed Mercy Mavericks (18-1)

I have already reviewed the non-bye teams, so let's get started with the Dolphins. A fine two-loss season for Le Moyne, who is perennially a serious contender for the NCAA championship. But their season started off with a 10-7 loss to these very Mercy Mavericks - so a chance for evening the score, so to speak in this quarterfinal. After that opening loss, the Dolphins reeled off six straight - most not close at all - until running into NE10 opponent Merrimack, where they dropped a close 12-11 decision. Then nine straight - including payback over Merrimack in the NE10 semifinals (winning 12-11 this time), and a second win of the season over Adelphi (both Adelphi games were a difference of two goals 10-8 and 11-9). And so the Dolphins on the strength of those wins/losses garner the #1 North seed.

Computer rankings for Le Moyne: Fanlax - #2/#23 SOS, masseyratings.com (not updated for Wednesdays first round) - #2/#1 SOS, KRACH - #2, and if played like regular season a 55.6% chance of winning Saturday. For Mercy: Fanlax - #6/#54 SOS, masseyratings.com - #10/#36 SOS, KRACH - #6

Check the preview for the Mercy/SHU game for a listing of top players for the Mavericks. For Le Moyne - #11 offense (15.12 GPG), #2 defense (7.53 GPG). Eleven (!) 10+ goal scorers for the 'Phins led by Matt Hutchings (32, 27), Riley Larson (37, 15) and Dan Entenmann (20, 25). Two players get the bulk of FOs - Sam Kury (214 attempts, 59.8%) and Ryan Gabriel (135 attempts, 53.3%). In goal is Riley Smith (7.22 GPG, 57.8 save %). Man up O 34.4% (#18), D is #30 at 71.2%.

Experience is on the Dolphin side, and they have extra motivation in facing Mercy due to the season opener. Have to give them the edge - but if Mercy can get on a roll scoring - watch out.

The Le Moyne Dolphins never trailed in this game - and led by 9-2 at the half en route to a 14-4 victory over the #4 North seed Mercy Mavericks.

Shots 41-14 Phins, SOG 24-10, GB 30-17, FO 14-8. With those numbers not surprising this one was not close.

No individual player on the Mercy squad had more than one point. For Le Moyne Sypek (2, 2), Hutchings (3, 1) and Entenmann (2, 2) to lead the team in scoring. In goal Gibbons for Mercy had 14 GA, 10 saves. Riley Smith had 4 GA and all six saves for the Dolphins.

Next up is Merrimack (#6 North seed) for the Dolphins...
