Preview of Wednesday first round game: Indy/Queens

Post by RedFromMI »

And now for the South region:

#3 seed Indianapolis (14-2) hosting #6 Queens (13-4)

The Indy Greyhounds got here on the strength of their 14-2 record, but losses to #1 seed Limestone and #2 seed Belmont Abbey cemented their spot in the tourney. The losses were by 3 to the Abbey and 6 to the Saints, but they had single point victories over #5 North seed Seton Hill and twice over league rival Rockhurst, (regular season in OT, and also winning the GLVC conference tourney). They beat #3 North seed Mercyhurst by a pair, and also have a win over ranked Lindenwood.

The Queens Royals started the season outside the pre-season coach's poll (receiving votes) but strung together a record of 11-1 (losing by a single goal to Limestone) until running into a rough patch. They finished the SAC regular season with a 13-12 loss to Catawba and a 11-9 loss to Wingate knocking them down to the #3 seed in the SAC tournament. Wins over Tusculum and payback to Catawba (by 14-2 this time) put them back in the tournament championship, where they fell short again to Wingate by an identical 11-9 score. But their superior strength of schedule, and their common opponent matchup with Rockhurst (12-4) allowed them to hang on to the sixth and last position in the NCAA tourney from the South.

Computer ratings: Fanlax - Indy #4 with #13 SOS, Queens #11 with #7 SOS. Masseyratings.com - Indy #7 with #15 SOS, Queens #13 with #23 SOS. KRACH
has Indy #3 and Queens #12, and if playing like the regular season, Indy has a 81.1% chance of victory in this game.

The Greyhounds have the #17 scoring offense in DII at 14.25 GPG, with their D at #12/9.44 GPG. Seven 10+ per game goal scorers led by Parker Kump (54, 19), Drew Billig (29, 17) and Matthew Johnson at (27, 19). Faceoffs are mostly handled by Robbie Berardi at a 67.1 % clip. In goal is Jarod Kimble with a 9.64 GAA and .495 save rate. Man down D is #3 in the country at .852.

The Royals O is #23 at 13.71 GPG, with the D at #7 (8.65 GPG). Man down D is #11 in the country at .754. Ten scorers at 10+, let by Kealan Pilon (33, 24), Quinn Tallant (38, 6) and Laszlo Henning (19, 12). FO specialist Drew Flack is at 63.1%. Keeper Kyle Hornik is at 9.09 GAA and .577 save rate.

Coach Chris Panos of the Royals, a former Tampa assistant, Hofstra player, and 12 year NLL veteran has Queens back in the tourney after a several year absence (and only the second time in said tourney). Indy coach Greg Stocks has been to the dance before as head coach of the Lake Erie Storm in 2013. Both teams ended the regular season with a loss, and which one overcomes it mentally better should have the edge in this one.

Winner to travel to Belmont, NC to face the Abbey on Saturday afternoon...

LW, never heard of that site, sounds interesting. I googled the name and couldn't find anything. Can you verify the name or provide a link? Thanks!

Only Day Three since the college Tourneys have started (including the MCLA) and... This one promises to be the best game thus far. The computer has Indy ahead of Belmont in the Rankings because of a lack of similar opponents... or Indy is a better team. As Queens is a worse team than Belmont, but they did beat Belmont, this game will mean something.

I'm on my way to see it in person. Should be a good one.

Gotta love U Indy. They still charge more than any D2 stadium in the country (in fact more than my ticket for UND - Hopkins on Sunday), and play AC-DC, not because it's a stadium Anthem but because that's what they still listen to!

A good game so far (2-2) but U Indy has already won the award for the biggest gap between the ability of their players and the knowledge of their fans. I'm gonna be entertained all day!

I feel like there could have been a push on uIndy prior to the penalty on Queens. Maybe that is why he retaliated.

When describing lacrosse to someone who doesn't know the game, I've always said the wrong team never loses. It's not like soccer, where a fluke kick can change the game. In lacrosse, if a team is dominant then they always win, and if a game is close then it's rightly so. This was no different, and everybody but one extremely agitated and loud Queens dad would probably agree.

I've seen Indy several times and they've always been a streaky team. Less so this year, but they will go through stretches where they play like absolute world-beaters, and then give it right back, and that's exactly what happened today. Queens was steady the entire game, and when Indy streaked they puled away, and then they let Queens right back in.

It was a really good game. Very well officiated game (from someone who didn't have a dog in the fight). I've never seen Queens before, but I felt like both teams played their games, and overtime was fitting.

Some random observations:
With only 28 players dressed and 12 seniors, Indy will have a tough time re-loading. This needs to be their year,
With 45 dressed and only 9 seniors, I'd expect Queens to be around for awhile,
Queens gets the award for the single most obnoxious fan,
Indy gets the award for the next 10,
Indy had the better box coach (gotta give some props to a good young coach),
Worst stadium music of the season award goes to Indy.

Looking forward to next week's games.

Like you're saying, Indy is very up and down. If they could stay up, they'd do a lot of damage.
