#4 seed Mercy (17-1) hosting #5 Seton Hill (12-4)
Mercy is the only DII team to finish with just a single loss. And along the way, the Mavericks were able to beat LIU Post twice, and NYIT (admittedly in a down year) once to garner both the ECC regular season crown and win the conference tournament. And early, the Mavericks were able to beat Le Moyne (#2 at the time) for the first time in three tries (also the Mavs highest ranked win) by three 10-7. But the one loss was a doozy on a day that also saw undefeated Adelphi fall: a 10-2 drubbing my visiting Mercyhurst (#12 at the time with three losses). But in spite of that result the Mavericks were able to have their most successful season in lacrosse.
Seton Hill University saw some adversity early in their season, falling to then #19 Indianapolis 10-9 in OT at home, followed by a 14-10 loss to Le Moyne the next week at a neutral site in Buffalo, NY, and three weeks later in Gaffney, SC to then #2 Limestone 15-14 to fall to 4-3. In that last game, the Saints were up 13-9 at the end of the third and were able to just hang on after being outscored 5-2 in the last period. But the Griffins ran off eight straight until the finals of the GMAC tourney where Mercyhurst got revenge for their regular season loss to SHU (13-11) by a score of 14-10 to fall to 12-4 and drop to the fifth seed and a trip to visit Mercy for this game.
Computer rankings: Fanlax - Mercy #7, #18 SOS; SHU #8, #15 SOS Massey - Mercy #10, #36 SOS, SHU #9, #10 SOS KRACH - Mercy #6, SHU #9, and Mercy a 69% chance of winning tomorrow if each team plays as they have in the regular season.
Mercy boasts the stingiest D in DII: 7.00 GPG. Offense is # 25 at 13.44 GPG. Seven players with an excess of 10 goals this season led by Bobby Chillianis at (43, 16), Ryan MacSpadyen at (39, 38) and Dominic Scorcia at (27,28). Ryan Gibbons in goal is at 6.84 GAA and .602 save rate. Faceoffs led by Antonio Rey with a 58% win rate. Seventh best man-up offense conversion at 40.2 %.
SHU is #11 in scoring D, so nothing to be ashamed of at 9.25 GPG. Offense is tied for #12 at 15 GPG. Nine players are double digit goal scorers, led by Robert Hofseth at (34, 8), Logan Maloni at (22, 28), and John Hofseth at (21, 21). Jay Scerbo is at 69.1 % at the faceoff (#8 nationally). Max Eismann in goal is at 9.37 GAA and .560... Team is #8 man-up O (.397) and #15 man-down D (.744).
Seton Hill is a bit more experienced near the top of DII lax - so I give them the slight edge even if seeded lower. But if the team that knocked off LIU Post twice and Le Moyne once shows up instead of the one that was there for the Mercyhurst game this one could be great.
Winner faces #1 seed Le Moyne on Saturday.

10 sec left - 15-10 Mercy - they took off in the 1st Q and never looked back (and never after the quarter led by less than 4)...
